Question about DVD-9 capacity

I read this on either this forum or AVS forum.

It was about the X-box 360 and its DVD drive compared to the PS3 and BD drive. It was about the game sizes.

Someone said that the DVD-9 of the 360 could not carry 9Gb, but only 7.xGB (7.8Gb?).

Why cant the DVD-9 for the 360 not hold more than 7.xGb of data. I mean it is called DVD-9 for a reason right? So why only 7.xGb's?

Does anybody know?

It's said the extra data that is part of the copy protection for XBox 360 games is to blame.

It's called DVD9 but the actual disc's capacity is 8.5GB, not 9GB.
Like the DVD5 is 4.7GB, not 5GB.

It was common that all DVD-9 discs (dual-layer) had 8.5 GBs in it.

Then last year, when I checked the specs of XBOX 360 DVD-9 discs, it only said that it had 7 GB average.

This then clears it up.

Now I know the actual reason as to why XBOX 360 discs shave off 1-1.5 GB off their total physical disc capacity.
