Default Any way to tell capacity used on a given BD?

Reading on another forum about the quality of 300 on hd-dvd vs Blu-ray Disc. Both formats use the same video and audio codec so is it safe to assume that the production company went cheap and made the size of the video the same on both formats. I'd like to believe that they would take advantage of the additional capacity to bring the best quality product to the consumer cause I'm selfish.

Frankly, I would have enjoyed it if there was more grain in the BD version than the hd-dvd.
