Hello, I would highly suggest listening to each of the receivers the 1800/805 as Yamaha and ONKYO have to very different overall sound detail. The Yamaha is known for being a very warm sounding receiver well the ONKYO I feel is a brighter overall sound. (Warm sound= is a complete 20-20 sound but drops about a half or so decibel on notes above 10khz(basically the highs are lowered a bit at all listening levels) The ONKYO and it "bright" sound leaves the highs 10khz untouched even at high levels of volume.

The thing is when buying receivers that are not entry or mid level but not the best available. The receivers can produce the same source sound in a different way on each Brand (as the Yamaha 1800 and the ONKYO 805 you are looking at)

I would suggest the ONKYO if you are going to use high power front speakers that are rated for 130 WATTS RMS (not peak) Multiple 6 1/2" or larger. If it just has one 61/2" or smaller and the mid and tweeter than the high current doesn't matter to you.

I own the ONKYO 875 and I love it. But the only thing I miss that Yamaha features, Is full control over the sound field processing on the go (not in the setup menu like my ONKYO) The ONKYO does have some sound field control but nothing like a 1800 or better Yamaha.

I am sure all owners and users opinions will differ but I would suggest the Yamaha if sound field processing adjustments is a preference of yours. Especially if you listen to 2 channel sources.

Also keep in mind that many people make the mistake/assumption that the ONKYO 805 will do 1080P upscaling when in fact it will only upscale to 720P via HDMI. The Yamaha will do 1080P upscaling

I would also keep in mind the ONKYO 875 if the 1080P upscaling is a feature you are looking for as now with HDMI being used on pretty much everything its a good thing to have a great VIDEO PROCESSOR suck as the HQV-REON that is in the 875.

PLEASE READ: I HAVE BEEN ASKED VERY NICELY TO DO SO,SO I WILL.

VIDEO UPCONVERSION: IS WHEN AN A/V RECEIVER TAKES AN ANALOG VIDEO SIGNAL (ex.Composite , S-Video and also Component Video) and will output those video signals as Component Video or as an all digital HDMI output (if the reciever has an HDMI ouput that is)* To match the input available on your TV.

*This allows for single video (and if needed audio also) to pass from the A/V receiver to the Television. (using only 1 input on the TV)
This allows for less confusion and wired connections to the TV, aswell as changing the TV's source input everytime a user changes the source (DVD, Game Console,VCR etc...) on the A/V receiver

VIDEO UPSCALING: IS WHEN ANY VIDEO RESOLUTION (480I/P,720P,1080I) IS UPSCALED AND THEN OUTPUT AT THE A/V RECEIVERS (each model may vary) SPECIFIED RESOLUTION (either @720p/1080I and 1080P(*1) output) via HDMI.(*2)

*1: Please read manufacturers specific details in regards to its VIDEO UPSCALING resolution capabilities.

*2: in some cases a reciever may be capable of VIDEO UPSCALING @1080P via Component Video.
With HDMI being more common on newer TV's ,HDMI would be the better choice of the two.

Just a few things to keep in mind.

1. The ONKYO SR-875 will upscale all signals 480i/p,720p,1080i and then output itat all stated resolutions aswell as 1080P (if the connected TV is 1080P capable) Users Choice.

2. THE ONKYO SR-805 (also all lower models in the current SR series) will UPSCALE VIDEO to the highest resolution of either 720P or 1080I

I think you might be mistaken as to what upscaling done in the receiver is about.

Its not traditional upscaling like a dvd player does. The term Upconversion should be used instead of scaling...too much confusion.

Video Upconversion is done in the Receiver when you input an Analog source, and output it over the HDMI cable. The Onkyo 805 does this analog to digital 'conversion' at a resolution output of 720p. (in essence, upscaling or even downscaling analog signal to 720p digital)

yes. It will pass 1080p from HDMI input and output HDMI 1080p.

Thats why I said "Conversion" should be used because "Upscale" causes too much confusion...because it only applies to Analog Input -> HDMI Output.

If you send 1080p via HDMI input, it will still be 1080p HDMI output.
