Default Need help in deciding...

Well Im in the market for a new TV.... Im going back and forth with 60 vs 120... now in all honesty... is it something that will jump out at me and Ill see and will be like "Kick ass! This is what Ive been missing" or is it something that cant really be seen???

Now Ive been looking at the following

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...gon=&langid=EN

and

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0099949&catid=

These are both 60's... please let me know what y'all think or the two... and if its worth it to shell out the extra $600-$800 for the 120's?

Cheers in advance!

I am skeptic of 120hz, the premise is that you have basically been watching 60hz all your life and its looked just fine for you all along until someone told you it did not. I would still 'future proof' my purchase and go with the 120hz like the KDL52W4100, because you can adjust the 120hz down to 60hz if you choose to.

Default Neither get a front projector dude!

I am sorry but today with the power of the internet my opinion is that unless you have a small budget of $700 or less you would be crazy not to go with a front projector. A front projector can be adjusted from 32" all the way to 15 feet! Thus you can adjust the screen to the exact maximum the room can handle and if you move to a bigger place you can adjust it again.

Did you know that you can get a 720p front projector from $700 to $1000 and a 1080 from $1300 to $2500? With your choices being in the $1500 to $1700 I would definately NOT get a TV but a front projector. There is no substitute for size! Be a man, size matters,

exactly, i remember standing in best buy checking out the 120hz when they first came out and the picture was sharp, it just seemed to weird. POTC was playing it just appear to stage like with keira knightly running across the boat but appeared to be flying. the cut from scene to scene feel like it "rolled."

you might end up switching off the 120hz.....

it's not actually the 120hz that makes it look that way. It varies in what it's called for each brand (eg. sony), but it's something like motionflo...
now with cartoons or pixar it looks amazing, but for everything else, it makes things look like it's a soap opera.
If you turn motionflo off, then it looks normal. The only thing is that it just doens't have that pop it once did. So I recommend going with a plasma. That way you don't ahve to worry about that problem.

GoYanks is right, its not the 120 or 60 hz refresh rate that gives you that look, its the motionflow (or whatever each MFG company calls it) that appears soap opera like. the 120 hz is for motion lag, which you will never see unless playing video game in the non game mode, which honestly isn't that big of a deal either. Honestly I don't really buy into it, everytime I seen an LCD with 120 hz and motionflow off, I can never tell a difference over my 60 hz TV when watching blus or sports.

I vote for going with the Sony. I have never had any problems with my Sony TV and it looks fantastic! You can always count on Sony to make a quality product in the television department.

I had a friend who bought a 52inch sharp that was 60hz, they say it looks like crap compared to my samsung (even though IMO samsung is superior in every way).

They said if they could but the tv again, they'd get a tv with 120hz.

This whole 60-120hz feature is confusing as hell to me. On the one hand people say to get a 120hz TV, but then on the other they say to turn of "motion-flow" feature with a 120hz TV. So why then buy a 120hz model when you need to turn off a feature?

Educate me....please!

John

you are talking about 60Hz and 120Hz that some call Auto Motion Plus. but for PQ you want contrast the higher
the better 50,000 and up. I have a samsung T240HD in the bedroom no 120Hz but 10,000:1 and looks good.
but I have a samsung LN46A650 in the livingroom with 50,000:1 and HOLEY S**T dose that look great.
good luck

This is something you need to decide for yourself. Go to a local retailer and check out the TV's. While most retailers do have the screens adjusted to look good in the show room that's the only way to judge for yourself. You wouldn't buy a car over the internet without test driving it would you? I hope not. You've alreay got one guy telling you to get a front projector and another guy telling you to get a plasma. When you ask for help from others online your going to get to many different opinions to make a clear choice because everyone thinks their equipment, set up and system is the best.

One of the major benefits of 120hz/72hz displays is their ability to playback 24p inputs without 3:2 pulldown. By turning on AutoMotion Plus, it interpolates frames between the 24 frames being sent to the television. By turning off AutoMotion Plus, the display will playback at 24fps which is the rate at which the film was originally projected.

I like to have my display interpolate live sports, but not films. I like to watch films as they were intended to be seen.

Refresh rates and "motion flow" are not the same thing, if it were then Sony would not be able to add "motion flow" to a 60hz TV.

Refresh Rates wikipedia

Sony Style website V series 60hz
Motionflow 60Hz technology
Motionflow 60Hz technology allows you to enjoy movies and prime-time TV (film-based content) with a clarity and resolution in motion that will spoil you. Sony’s Motionflow motion-compensation algorithm identifies film content and removes “judder”. That means you'll get a clearer picture during sweeping pans with reduced visible jerking or stuttering.

Sony Style website W series 120hz
Motionflow™ 120HZ technology
Motionflow™ 120HZ technology doubles the frame rate to help remove judder in film sources, HD content, and broadcast movies and primetime programming, creating smooth, more fluid motion that delivers a natural and realistic viewing experience.

sony's 120hz is much better than samsungs. theirs seems to be way too strong even on the low setting. if your gonna have it off most of the time then why waste the money? get a nice V series sony or a 580 samsung

the 120 hz refresh rate cannot be adjusted, it just is, its either 60hz or 120hz, read the link above you.

If your going to have the 120hz feature turned off then go with the Sony V series. I have a 46inch Sony V series tv and it rocks and its only 60hz. Either way you cant lose really. Its all up to you and what you like.
