Default getting PS3 to recognize external usb drive connected to computer

This is gonna probably be a dumb question to ask but here goes:
I have a 500 GB external USB drive connected to my Computer that I can stream music pictures and video clips to the PS3. ive found that I have to do the following scenario every time i want the PS3 to recognize the media server. ( I use windows media player with xp pro).
First i turn the drive on and the computer recognizes the drive...then I have to go in and turn file sharing off then back on again (windows media player) before i can do the search for media servers otherwise the ps3 wont find it.
if I turn the drive or the computer off I have to go back and turn file sharing off and on again and do the search for media player to get it to connect.
is there a way for the PS3 to communicate automatically rather than having to turn file sharing off then on again.

I can connect the drive directly to the ps3 but i lose the WMP functionality.
Just wondering if theres a better way.

I hope i dont sound too confusing

i have an external usb harddrive hooked up to my computer but it always stays on. and i'm using TVersity as my media server which boots with windows...my PS3 always recognizes it without having to turn the HD on/off or the media server on/off...not really a fan of WMP...only time i have to touch TVersity on my PC is when i add new media to refresh the library.

Ill try the TVersity program and see how it works. thanks for the help!

no problem...i highly recommend TVersity...its more compatible with different media files that are not able to stream thru WMP..encoding on the fly.

preivous forum with a brief summary:
TVersity + PS3 = Fantastic

well i downloaded TVversity waited for it to update my library etc... for the life of me i couldnt figure out how to get the ps3 to recognize it as a media server. I ended up removing it from my computer. personally I think it has a really cheap feel and its still in beta form. I have no use for the transcoding.. I have about 450 GB of my music stored in wav files. I also have about 2 gigs of Jpegs from my digital camera on there. I saved everything in wave files to the hard drive thinking id get cd quality sound on my system... not even close. ( I have a wired gigabit network not wireless)

I had problems with TVersity at first as well - didn't seem to load my library like it was supposed to and stopped using it - then, I tried it again a few weeks later and it worked like a champ.

I actually liked it much better than Windows Media.

The re-encoding is more helpful for avi/divx/mpeg movies than for music. If you have home movies or avi movies, this program can really help with that "format not recognized/unsupported format" cr@p.

I suggest giving it another shot. It works great for many people.

Take it easy,

PS3 shoud automatically recognize WMP11 with the media sharing enabled, make sure your firewall is configured correctly.

Make sure you add the folders that contain your media files to be shared on the media server.

Also, you may need to allow your PS3 to access the media server, you will just simply open the Media Sharing window under WMP11 and allow the "unknown Device" which is your PS3 to connect to it.

WMP11 is a bit unstable, but it works, does not transcode or reduces quality of the video, you just have to make sure the file formats to be shared are supported on the PS3...

ive done all that stuff my problem arises when I shut the drive off or reboot the computer... the only way the ps3 will recognize the media server again is by turning off media sharing and then turning it on again and then going to the ps3 and do th search for media servers. taking with someone thats into networking said yea if your shutting stuff down thats what you will have to do... If i leave the computer and ext drive on and shut the ps3 down I dont have to do that.. from what she said it establishes a pathway once that pathway has been cut off it has to be re-established.
i remember back in the day having to network a win95NT setup for our families bowling alley on the autoscoring computers. what a PITA that was.

I run both WMP11 and TVersity. Tversity has a restart sharing option tab in settings. Once I do that, WMP11 suddenly pops up as well. I just get round it that way most of the time. Unfortunately WMP11 assumes connection will be made straight away as there is no option to test the status of the connection.
