PS3 shoud automatically recognize WMP11 with the media sharing enabled, make sure your firewall is configured correctly.

Make sure you add the folders that contain your media files to be shared on the media server.

Also, you may need to allow your PS3 to access the media server, you will just simply open the Media Sharing window under WMP11 and allow the "unknown Device" which is your PS3 to connect to it.

WMP11 is a bit unstable, but it works, does not transcode or reduces quality of the video, you just have to make sure the file formats to be shared are supported on the PS3...

ive done all that stuff my problem arises when I shut the drive off or reboot the computer... the only way the ps3 will recognize the media server again is by turning off media sharing and then turning it on again and then going to the ps3 and do th search for media servers. taking with someone thats into networking said yea if your shutting stuff down thats what you will have to do... If i leave the computer and ext drive on and shut the ps3 down I dont have to do that.. from what she said it establishes a pathway once that pathway has been cut off it has to be re-established.
i remember back in the day having to network a win95NT setup for our families bowling alley on the autoscoring computers. what a PITA that was.

I run both WMP11 and TVersity. Tversity has a restart sharing option tab in settings. Once I do that, WMP11 suddenly pops up as well. I just get round it that way most of the time. Unfortunately WMP11 assumes connection will be made straight away as there is no option to test the status of the connection.
