Default Temperature Monitor for Onkyo Receivers

Hey I came across a pretty cool little menu that shows the temperature of your Onkyo receiver.
I personally tried it on my 805, and have heard of it working with the 503, 605, 905.

Directions:
- Press and hold the Display button
- While holding Display, press and release the Power button once
- Release the Display button
- Quickly press the Tone button

*Note: Press all the buttons on the Receiver, not on the remote.

If you do all of that right your receiver should display this (it's kind of hard to get to):

T: 44/ 45FAN:-
V: 0.00 SEC:H

The 44/45 is the temperature I believe (in Celsius).
I emailed Onkyo to ask them what the rest of all that stuff means last night. Once they respond I'll let you know what it all means.

Running my receiver for about two hour with a PCM signal at moderate volume, I managed to get my 805 up to 52C (125F for all you Americans out there ). the highest I heard so far was up to 70C (158F).

Enjoy!

PS: There's another hidden menu on my 805, if you do the same steps as above but instead of pressing Tone press Setup, it'll give you some menu. I don't know what anything on it means though. It does have 114F written there, but that doesn't seem to change. I'll post what it looks like when I get home from work.

No, the Tone button is only on the receiver. Well at least it was for me or I couldn't find it on the remote.
I pressed all the buttons on the receiver itself.

This is the temperature at 2 locations inside the receiver, not of the chassis around it. Onkyo hasn't responded yet about what they're for, but I think this may just be a better way then sticking a thermometer on it.

The temp portion of this has been covered in the AVS forum owners thread (highly recommend it for 805 owners). I think they also have the information on the rest of the info.

first and second number are two different temp sensors (and yes -- that is in C).

The Fan tells you if the onboard fans are running. - is off, an there are H and L for high and low (I think there is one for Mid as well -- M).

The second set of numbers -- after V -- is unknown to me, but if you check the AVS owners thread, my bet is you will find the info.

Thanks!
You wouldn't happen to know what the temperature sensors are for though would you? I'm kind of looking to know what they're measuring. Heat sink temp? Core temp? Amp?
Also, I've never been able to get the fan running. At what temperature does it kick in?

Check out the Receiver forums at AVS -- a few folks have done "tests" where they blared stupidly loud music and got the fans to kick up to high. I find that my receiver (and 805) gets warm to very warm to the touch when I play through a whole movie at about -8db (which is really loud).

tried it on my 705. works fine. mine is at 52/125. i have an antec av cooler running on high on top of it. I may experiment to see if this actually helps or hinders my receiver.

Mine too, I tried running it for a couple hours at -10dB using a 7.1 PCM track but I still couldn't get the fan going. I think it topped out in the mid 60's.

i have a fan on mine pointed out the back of the entertainment center for more ventilation because of the glass doors. theres plenty of room overhead. with the fan it runs about 113-115f but without it runs up to 120-125f. this seems to still be in a safe zone but the top grill still feels pretty hot and has me concerned. think maybe i still need the fan. does anyone know if there is a way to keep the display so it doesnt have to be entered every time?

Make sure you're pressing the buttons one the reciever not on the remote, as for timing, press and hold display till you see the display on the reciever changes my displayed "108060/1080" then I pressed and released the power button, then released the disaplay button, then no less than two seconds later pressed the tone button, and it displayed the temperatures.

thanks. that was it...i was using the remote and pressing the tone button on the receiver itself...i wasnt just using the receiver by itself...

just sitting here idle...my 605 is reading 44c. i forgot to mention that my receiver just finished watching a movie at 68 volume and had been idling for about 20 minutes...

lemme crank it for another 20 minutes with some music at 75 volume and ill report back.

EDIT:
i just tested my receiver...it just seems to depend a lot on the source material...
i listened to 15 minutes of music...ranging from laguna coil, korn, to joe satriani.

it maxed out at 64c when listening to the first 3 tracks of laguna coil...then it dropped down as it went to korn and then on to joe. it dropped to 57c listening to joe...

this was at 75 volume coming from my computer sound card hooked up via analog multi channel.

this equates to about 95dB per my spl meter listening volume (which is loud as hell to me).
