Default Help finding a Reciever!

I'm not ready to buy just yet, but I wanted your guys opinion on some Sony receivers than can do DTS HD/MA.

I know everyone here likes the onkyo 605 and above, I was hoping to find something in the sony brand thats good if possible, thanks?

The new line of Sony's, starting with the 820. They come out end of this month I believe.

Which Blu-Ray player do you own? Only a select few can bitstream the lossless codecs. Do you need HDMI 1.3?

Default Honestly

Honestly I'm very picky how my stuff functions, and how it LOOKS, I'd like to try and get everything sony if possible, I know the other brands are good, I'm just all about the Sony Style, but if theres a similar priced product thats heads and tails above from another company then I'd prolly go for it

I've got a PS3 60GB, my tv however doesn't have 1.3 hdmi even though the native res is 1080p it only can input 1080i which then uses cinemotion to deinterlace

With a PS3, the receiver doesn't have to be able to decode DTS-HD or TrueHD, since the PS3 can't bitstream them anyways. You'll just need to have one that can handle PCM audio, and is HDMI.

The cheapest Sony that'll do it is the DG810 (someone put me onto that one) and it's under 300. That's barebones though, but it'll do it.

It really depends on how far you want to push things like future upgrades and what-not.

But unless I'm mistaken, the 810 is the lowest on the Sony chain that'll do it. Anything higher than that and you should be set too.

Your ps3 can't bitstream DTS-MA, never will, so you don't need a reciever that can decode it. You only need one that can accept 96/24-bit PCM signals and nearly all HDMI recievers can do that.

My personal experiences with Sony audio gear have not been great, I would go with something else. Yamaha has a great history and they have a new lineup out now as well. Denon and Onkyo have solid products out now as well. The last thing you want to do is buy a reciever based on looks alone.

Default ok

since I know what I need now, I do want to spend as little as possible and get the best value, I just want to make sure on top of what I need for the PS3 to decode the audio that it has 7.1 the dg810 while good is only 6.1

I think that the DG720 ($300) will do what you want. The only thing I was concerned about was whether or not it would process audio via HDMI, but it appears that it does unless I'm reading wrong, or reading wrong information.

Maybe someone else can confirm, but that should be the cheapest Sony 7.1 that will do what you want it to.

If I'm understanding what I'm reading right, it won't pass the HD codecs via HDMI, but it will pass uncompressed PCM by it (and since the PS3 decodes them to PCM, that's what it would be passing on), so I believe that would work.

It won't upscale from component/analog sources however. If you're dead-set on Sony, I would go with the new 820. It's priced at $400 I believe.
