Default Router selection for PS3

Hey guys, I was wondering what brand of home routers would you recommend in terms of getting the best networking performance for the PS3? I am currently using a Linksys WRH54G, but need to replace it because I need to network a laptop, desktop, 360, and two other PS3's. I have also purchased the Linksys WRT160N, WRT54GS, WRT110 and they all have given me problems here and there even though I followed the installations instructions - its either that my PS3s had a hard time connecting, my PCs would sometime not have internet connection or in the case of the WRT54GS, it would just drop connection and I had to constantly reset the router. I need some help.

P.S. - Does G with Mimo or N type networks really help that much?

I have a WRT54G running DD-WRT and it works great with all of my wireless devices (even the Nintendo DS, which is very finnicky).

PS3, Wii and laptop all hooked up with the wifi and have a great signal in different rooms.

If you can get one from eBay, do it. The older ones are better for DD-WRT if you want to run the custom firmware (more flexibility/powerful options).

Edit:
Also, most devices are G... N is the new "standard" (is it really a standard yet, not sure) so that will be a little more futureproof, but probably not necessary.

i use a belkin wireless g. everything is wired except the laptop. works great. before was a dlink that worked great too but not wireless. had a linksys wired router but gave me problems. spent hours with tech support only for one of the to tell me its defective and other techs telling me they wouldnt honor the warranty. so i bought the d link and hooked it up and worked right out of the box. same with the belkin

What is DD-RWT?

dd-wrt is a custom firmware for some linksys (and buffalo) routers. It's a bit more powerful than the standard firmware that linksys provides (more options, more efficient use of resources?). It's Linux based, and I'm a geek so I want to piddle with things.

The WRT54G is a good router though, they are older and I don't think they are made any longer.

I have the Dlink DGL-4300. I have 2 laptops, printer, main computer, 360, Wii and a ps3. Setup was easy and I replaced my Linksys WRT54-GS. I can't say enough good things about it. The new model is DGL-4500.

Well, I just purchased the WRT54GS (Speedbooster Edition) and originally it was working fine like the first 10 minutes after setting everything up. Then it just started disconnecting my PS3s, Laptop, and PC. I followed the installation as provided on the CD. I set-up my home networks through my desktop which runs XP Home Edition.

+1 for DD-WRT
I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT installed and it's given me zero problems compared to the standard firmware. Also, I configured QoS and that really made my laptop and PS3 happier.
(To the OP, DD-WRT info can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD-WRT )

I personally use a Belkin N1. I hear all kinds of bad things about playing online multiplayer via wireless, but not with this bad boy. It's blazing, and I don't exactly have great internet speed. I'd recommend it any day. Their support and set up is par-none, and that's having dealt with both Netgear and Linksys/Cisco.

If you're technically inclined at all (i.e. if you can set up a router, which it appears you can) try installing DD-WRT on your WRT54GS. It might help out with dying connections. Basically it's a new OS for your router, so it will manage the memory/resources differently and may solve some issues.
For specific versions of your router, try http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

Disclaimer: Even though it's fairly failproof, I can't advise you to do this if you don't feel comfortable as it could brick your router (if done incorrectly). I also can't take responsibility if that happens. However, if it screws up I or someone else can help get the original firmware back.

I would use this (DD-WRT on a WRT54G) or a N-based router. You should notice a performance (increased range/speed/stability[for N]) difference.

I use the WRT54GS as well. No problems so far, make sure you have the media sharing disabled. Also, check what your NAT type is.

Well, I purchased again the Linksys WRT160N after talking with some guys at Circuit City. Anyhow, got home and installed using the CD - that sure was a mistake. Not only did the CD install and configure my network/internet settings, but it totally prevented me from getting online even with the router disconnected and just my ethernet cable from my modem hookep up to my PC. Anyhow, I ended calling my ISP (Clearwire) and they had to reset my whole modem and settings. Then, I called Linksys (approximately 30 minutes talk total) and I had them manually install my home router via phone. Now, everything works great, with all PS3s having NAT Type 2 and PnP enabled! Even my laptop is using N networking! I will say that the WRT160N is a nice router if configured and setup properly. Word of advice for those of you planning to get the newer Linksys models, I think its best to install manually than using the CD.
