I know there must be some night owls out there who stayed up to download and test the PS3 2.30 update. I expected to see more posts about it this morning but only managed to find a couple comments. So let's hear it guys, how is DTS-MA? Is it breathing new life into some of your BD collections? How does it stack up to TrueHD and PCM 5.1?

I watched some bits of Ronin this morning, switching back and forth between the DTS HD MA track and the core 1.5mbps DTS track. The difference varies depending on the content. For dialogue I could hear little difference. I could hear quite a difference in the string instruments in the music. Also, I watched a scene in a subway with a lot of surround sound action, and it was much more enveloping in the lossless track. The PS3 makes it quite slow to switch between PCM and bitstream to compare the lossless track against the lossy core, so it isn't all that easy to compare them. |

I downloaded before work this morning and tried out "Hairspray" because it has 7.1 DTS MA. In the opening scene I found the background sounds to be more distinct and bright. I was only able to watch literally 2 minutes due to the download taking so long, but the bitrates made it up to 6.8. Can’t wait to try ID4 to hear how good it sounds. One thing is for sure, it was a good feeling seeing the DTS MA on the display screen finally.

So far I only listened to I Robot which seems to have better bass management on the DTS HD-MA decode rather than the 1.5Mbit Core. Strangely enough I felt it had too much bass when listening to the Core. When switched to DTS HD-MA it did sound more natural

has anyone put in shoot'em up??? I played it and my ps3 said 7.1 but my receiver only played 5.1... at the beginning the new line cinema part is in 7.1 and when I play games I can get 7.1, so I don't know what the problem is. Any help would be great.

Same over here with Shoot'em Up. No sound from back surrounds.

Sounds great. I tried out a little bit of Speed this morning just to make sure it worked.
I thought it was funny that the screen that said "This update Includes" only talked about the Playstation Store, said nothing of DTS-HD-MA. I agree that it was nice to see the codec show up on the display. |

Another thread has mentioned that there have been issues getting 7.1 to work.
It seems most titles come out as 5.1, and those that show 7.1 have no sound out of the rear channels. This could need an patch. |

I don't have a 7.1 setup (receiver has it but no room for the speakers) so I'm very happy with the update. I tried a few DTS HD MA discs and am amazed at how good they sound. Kingdom of Heaven is one that sounds totally amazing almong with I, Robot.
All this talk about Shoot em Up might force me to go out and buy it today since I had only rented it before. I love that movie and I can imagine that it will sound great with MA. |

Tried out the first 25 minutes of Die Hard One today.
Bit rates are typically about 2.1 Mbps instead of 1.5 Mbps for the core. But sometimes it jumps to 3 or 4 Mbps briefly. Highest I saw was 4.3 Mbps but only for 1 second. Can I absolutely tell it is better? Probably not. But still my PS/3 is now complete. Nice to hear Hairspray gets much higher Mbps. Possibly the more recent titles will demo this better. |

I saw it go up to 6 or 7 Mbps on a few titles. The bit rate doesn't really mean too much though as it is lossless. Uncompressed PCM should equal soundwise TrueHD which should equal DTS HD MA if they were all coming from the same source. Newer titles will likely benfit more. I plan to try out the 1st 3 Die Hard movies later today to see. I don't have Live Free or Die Hard yet but will have to buy it now.
I was switching back and forth between the audio tracks on a few titles and the main thing is the finer clarity of the background sounds. Also there are some very quiet sounds that I can now make it that I couldn't before. And the bass seems more even. Sure it isn't a huge leap in many cases but i'd rather listen to the best possible sound just like I would rather watch the best possible picture. Now I can say I can see and hear the best that there is for home video. |
