Default Now that we have DTS-HD MA for PS3, this is next.

BD50 is going to have the feature listed below.

"Another new feature is support for 24p playback of upconverted standard-definition DVDs."

It would work only if the DVDs are correctly encoded with the right cadence flags. Otherwise, the player will go nuts trying to figure out which frame is what. Good feature to have for the obscure movies you love.

isn't the player just running a reverse 3:2 pulldown to do this? nothing CELL can't handle. I belive the A35 HD DVD player had this feature, bout time a blu-ray player did.

That's essentially correct. All the HD DVD players that could output 1080p24 could also do it from standard DVDs because the HD DVD format used the same outdated flagging system. So, in order to output 1080p24, the players had to perform the reverse pulldown on HD DVD or DVDs.

Since Blu-ray players don't have to do this, most of them (including the PS3) just decode the video to 1080p24 directly. To add 1080p24 output for DVD sources, they would have to write the code for the reverse 3:2 pulldown, which isn't too problematic, except that you cannot really trust the cadence flags encoded on DVDs. Many of them are a mess, so you would either need to deal with a ton of support calls or code a more complicated work-around for problem discs.
