Default DTS-HD MA on PS3

Did some searching, understand that it won't bitstream or decode... Wanted to make a post to try and combine all rumors/speculation to derive if the PS3 will ever decode this or pass it bitstream?

I kept reading about a march 07 release and an october 07 released and a bunch of other crap, but nothing is confirmed because of Sony... So whats the deal?

Probably not before Sony gets a standalone that does the decode. It's been said that a software update is in the works.

As CAB mentioned, all indications are that it will be able to decode DTS-MA in the future with a FW update. Sony is waiting on some standalong players to have the internal capability first.

My problem with this answer though is why wait for standalones, wouldn't you want to push the PS3 so you could boost software sales for more than just Blu-Ray movies? I mean... if I'm sitting there with a PS3 I bought just to watch movies but by some wild itch saw a game I'd like to play... Isn't that pretty darn convenient?

The PS3 has enough power to decode DTS-HD MA just like it does now with Dolby TrueHD. My guess is that the code is done and waiting to be released with a firmware update at some point in the future. But indications from various insiders is that Sony is unwilling to release the update yet with no standalone Blu-ray player on the market able to internally decode it. Remember that Sony has many manufacturing partners in the BDA and is not going at it alone like Toshiba is doing with HD DVD.

It is coming to the PS3 but no one can tell you the exact date it will happen. I would project anywhere from three to six months.
