Default 720p on 32"

I have just bought a 32" 720p Sharp Aquos.
Originally, I bought the 1080p version, bought I just couldn't stomach spending the extra $600, so I took it back.

My question is this:

Will I notice that much of a difference watching blu-rays on such a small screen?

(I sit about 7' away)

I doubt you would see any difference at that seating distance (i.e. 7’ for 32” set). 1080p would have let you sit closer.

However, my worry is the quality of the scaler that you would use to convert to 720P. You may or may not see scaling art-effects depending on the quality of the scaler. I am not sure about the quality of the scaler in your TV set. In general, if the content is 1080p, downscaling to 720P is not complex as upscaling from 720 to 1080. Hence, we could expect it to do a reasonable job and you will be satisfied with the picture quality for blu-ray metrial.

Someone with direct experience with your TV set may further clarify this issue.

With that small a screen, sitting 7 feet away, I doubt you will see a difference.

I agree...... Good call on taking it back and saving that $600

It's all personal "thoughts" despite the charts out there saying at what size-to-seating distance ratio is "noticeable" difference..... but we all have different eyesight (like hearing differs)

But I think if I got a 42" or bigger, I'll get 1080p, but if I decided to get another t.v. and was planning on putting it in a spare bedroom or something, I'd probably get a 32" and it would DEFINITELY be 720p, and if it was a bigger bedroom and I thought it warranted a 37", it'd still be 720p

According to this chart, you'd have to sit less than 5' away to see the benefits of 1080p. I'd say you made a good choice.

I own a 720p 32" Samsung, and sit about 7 feet away. It looks good at that distance. I am hoping to upgrade to a bigger tv/better resolution in the future though!

I really doubt you will notice the difference, you really need the higher definition when you get into the larger sizes... I think for the size you bought, you made the wiser choice.

No worries. You shouldn't see a difference at all, unless you have bionic eyeballs. Consider the people here your TUMS.

I agree. 720p is sufficient for 32"

I wouldn't even think you would be able to notice much between a regular DVD and Bluray on such a small screen and being 7 feet away. If you don't have a BluRay player yet, I would wait until you got a bigger TV, otherwise you'll be spending a lot on movies without really being able to fully take advantage of it.

Hi OP,
How did it go. Are you satisfied with the PQ of 720p at your seating distance. Interesting to find out. Thanks.

I noticed at my local Sam's club they have both the 720p and 1080p Sharp 32" for the same price $820. Looked like a one time "limited purchase" however.

My 32" is a 1080p, but I got it right around Christmas for $800. It was the size I wanted, and I figured for that price I might as well.

I love it -- though I won't attest to noticing any difference in PQ. It's still a great set!

What exactly do you disagree with? I'm recommending he save his money and wait until he has a TV that will make best use of a BluRay player. BluRay players are going to be dropping in price pretty quickly over the next few months now that HD-DVD is gone and consumer demand is rising. The honest truth is that right now is a bad time to buy a BluRay player if you are trying to be cost effective. So my recommendation is to just wait because now that the format war is over, we can have a price war

I'm disputing the fact that you said he wouldn't be able to tell the difference in DVD and Blu-Ray on a 32" 720P television, and I'm saying the difference is still huge, and well worth it...... How long should he wait? If you just started getting into Standard DVD now, you can pick them up all over the place for $5 a movie, and $25 for a player, but who would wait 11 years?

There is definitely a noticeable difference between DVD and Blu-Ray even on a 32" inch screen. I have one and can easily tell a difference depending on where I'm sitting. I usually sit within a 4-5 foot range. No problems at all telling a difference.

Between 720p and 1080p, that's maybe a different story but even then in certain parts of movie in that difference is noticeable. But again, maybe JMO.

I have a 24in Dell Monitor that is 1080p - I have played Casino Royal DVD and Blu Ray on it and I can tell the difference. I think on a 32" in you will notice the difference from further away.
