Default Netscape Finally Put Down

"Stony Stevenson writes to point out that Netscape has finally reached end of line with the release of version 9.0.0.6. A pop-up will offer users the choice of switching to Firefox, Flock, or remaining with the dead browser, but no new updates will be released."
Quote:
"Nearly 14 years after the once mighty browser made its first desktop appearance as Mosaic Netscape 0.9, its disappearance comes as little surprise. Although Netscape accounted for more than 80 per cent of the browser market in 1995, the arrival of Microsoft's Internet Explorer in the same year brought stiff competition and surpassed Netscape within three years."

Thanks for sharing, what a sad end for that browser, I used to love that back in the early 90's, until Internet Explorer actually became usable. But it has been pretty crappy in the past few years.

Indeed. I think the fall of Netscape happened because AOL's technology screws up the basic core codes. At least I have Firefox. Loathe to use IE.

Once they spun off the Netscape code to create the Mozilla browser, now Firefox, I never got what the point was supposed to be with keeping the Netscape project around.

Basically they'd release a new version of Mozilla, which you could download right away, then several weeks later the same code would be released rebranded as Netscape. Why?

I suppose it's kind of sad, but any vestige of the original spirit of the Netscape codes has continued in the Firefox line, so it's only the end of the name.

I can't imagine any current or future browser good enough to make me switch from the all mighty Firefox. To me Firefox is perfect.

Reports of Usenet's "death" are highly exaggerated--
But if Netscape 8.x wasn't going to include a Mozilla mail/news browser as good as its 7.x's, who needed it?

(Presumably because Mozilla struck out on its own, and oh well, there's always Thunderbird, and Apple Safari for the browser.)

Netscape 6 was the turning point. That version was so bloated and God-awful slow; two days after I downloaded it, I defected to IE.

Yep. I remember using Netscape 4.7 exclusively in 1998-99 until Version 6 came out. I actually purged Version 6 and stuck with 4.7 for awhile.

Today: I'm a Firefox user. The 'Download them all' button helped save some time this one day, and I stuck with Firefox ever since.

Firefox is fine but people shouldn't forgot Opera. I've found it's a little faster than Firefox and definitely has less memory leaks.
