Default Can you put your Sub near your Plasma?

I know older CRT TV's you had to keep your sub a distance away from your TV.

My question is can you put the sub close to your plasma or LCD? I ask as I bought this stand for my new 58" 800u Panasonic Plasma, and it shows a sub directley underneath the set. Can, or should you do this?
