Default Buying new home and need advice

Ok, the new home has a room in the basement that is about 12' wide x 20' long (roughly). My questions are...

I have a 50" DLP TV. Do I put it so it would face length wise? So, then I can put a sofa in for seating. Or put it facing width wise, so I can put a few sofas (or whatever seating).

OR...Get a projector?

This may not be the best description, but it's late...it's my birthday...so I can do what I want today!

i say get a projector. the gf and i will be closing on a house the 31st and its got a full unfinished basement and i already plan on puttin a theater room in it. if its a dark room and you love movies as much as i do.you could put the screen on the 12' wall and just get some theater sets, like a couple rows of 3 seats. my opinion would be projector. good luck!

By saying a couple rows...are you saying building (2x4's and plywood) my own stadium seating?

stadium seating? thats funny!!

I think the TV and proper placement of the speakers with 7.1 ch audio is all you are gonna need. Build from there.

All you need ia a couch Love seat to be specific

My Wife and I are looking for a new house right now, and a suitable theater room is one of the "must haves" for the home..... so Projector is a MUST.

EDIT (that is of course because we don't have a large DLP etc.... so the projector will be our first "Big Screen" )

you could do that, or you could just buy seats and put like 3 in a row then behind them have 3 seats but move that row over alil so when youre sittin in the 2nd row youll be sittin inbetween the seats of the 1st row, if that makes sense.

It'll work with the seats spaced properly. If not, then the people on the third row will be moving their heads alot to look around the second and first row since they wont be elevated any.

Cheap way around it - cyinder blocks under the chairs. Which I knew someone who did that. Very very weird he is.

I'm planning on building "platforms" like a choir/stage would have. Then carpeting over them.

i would go with a projector it changes the movie viewing into an experience , as for seating i would have about 2-3 theater recliners in the front then you can build a platform behind that with a couch or more theater seating

Thanks everyone for the help so far...even the gay drawing (just kidding - made sense to me). If anymore ideas out there....let me know.

I'm probably going to do the projector and bring some movie posters and bus shelters home from work (GM @ movie theater) to complete the room once we move in. I think it's going to be a slow process putting everything together.

My vote goes to a projector as well. It is a different dimension to a TV which require space, light control etc. Your basement seems to be ideal for that.

PROJECTOR!!!

I suggest the Epson 1080p UB. I hear the BenQ W5000 is also really good. for a 12x20 room, id put the screen on one of the 12' walls, something like 100-120". You will have plenty of room.

Is it better to get the motorized screen? Also, how do you know if you can hang a projector from the ceiling...or can all hang with the proper clip thingy?

20, is too small for 3 rows. (at least three real rows) You need to leave a few feet in the back for propper surround. So it would be something like 8' between screen and seat (seat= eye location not feet) and then 6' to row two (back of seat to back of seat) min, if you add a third row the people iin the back will be too close to the speakers

____ wall/screen

UUU row 1

UUU row 2

___ back wall

an other idea (if you need more seating) is to also buy bar stools and use them for the third row

____ wall/screen

UUU row 1

UUU row 2
oooo stools

___ back wall

I would also highly recommend having a riser (even if you also do staggered seating)

Also a nice proscenium makes it look so much more fancy, improves the audio and does not add too much to the cost.

you are limited to 2 rows, offset the head or viewing area..
you may want to do a mini step and have the 2nd row approx 12" higher

the projector must connect to something solid above, there are special
mounts avail.

I like offset love seats, so I can have couples over and they can......
