Default HD-DVD and Blu-Ray both Betamax?

Has anyone thought about the possibility that both formats will have a short lifespan and would give way to a superior format altogether?...

I have this strange feeling that this format war will be over in 2-3 years with both of them giving way to a digital format...like SD type cards or something....something that resembles 2010(ish).....

has anyone heard about another format that may come out in the future?...because, if this format war doesn't do well on both sides...I think they may push the new format earlier than anticipated...

The new format is internet delivered content from Microsoft, THAT is why it is in their best interest to throw coals on the fires of the format war

Optical media is much cheaper than flash media. And digital distribution isn't a possibility, since the masses don't have50+Mbps connections.

4k will be the next level.

4k (4096 x 2160) is the resolution used for DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) and I believe NHK claims that they will broadcast in 4k around 2011. It is also the resolution used for DI (Digital Intermediate) in some cases I believe.

So... something to look forward to.

Optical media is also more reliable then flash media. Optical media is immune to large magnetic fields.
There is talk of in a few years holographic storage optical drives that would be able to hold one terabyte worth of data for computers. In theory this would be better then Blu-ray if it every makes it to market. They would still need to get the support of Hollywood studios to release movies on holographic discs. DVD has been with us since 1997 which is 10 years. Blu-ray should be with us for 10 years also as a optical backup media with 200GB and possible 250GB multilayer discs for computer backup.
With very little studio support HD-DVD will die. HD-DVD needs MGM/Sony, FOX, and Disney. Blu-ray only needs Universal studios to cross over and then this format war is over.

One would still need a 4k resolution TV to watch it all. Food for thought.
