Never heard of it, but apparently the uses for Silicon are still getting larger. Maybe check the World Wide Web.

Just don't use the image search and type in "silicon larger" - you might get results that your search engine will not let you display unless you alter your preferences.

There is only 1 currently produced player with a Silicon optics chip (they have 2 different chips).

The Denon 3800, it contains the Realta chip that is currently the best available upconverting chip for SD DVDs.

So if you want the best possible upconversion for SD DVD and have $2000 to spend, then go for it.

My fault, the Sammy combo player includes the Reon chip, also by silicon optics. A slight downgrade to the Realta, but an excellent upconverter in its own right.

The Toshiba Xa2 upconverting DVD player has a Reon chip in it.

The Onkyo 875 and 905 receivers have the Reon chip. Which mean you can get its benefit from sources beyond the disc player. For example, it upscales my cable and Laserdisc too.

Critically, it does both 3:2 and 2:2 de-interlacing properly.

Reon and Realta are the HQV processors.

So does the Onkyo and Integra. Not BR players.

Anywho, if you want a silicon optix chip in a SA BR player. You have to get the Denon 3800.

I have a Samsung BD-P1200 and it has a REON chip inside of it. It is kind of like a double edged sword. If a SD DVD has excellent PQ to begin with the player really makes the image fabulous but if the disc is of poor PQ then it exaggerates the flaws and you really notice how bad the quality is. I have found that when using this player it is better to to turn the sharpness to low or off.

If you have the opportunity to get a player with either chip inside of it I would go for it. Please before anyone goes and rips on the BD-P1200. The only thing that sucks is the manufactures support not the player. The bugs are caused by Samsumg.

True, but the OP didn't specify SA BD player.

I think it was safe to assume he was asking specifically about a BR player, not an HD DVD player.

I didn't include the 1200 simply because it is not manufactured any more.

I said it was an "Upconverting DVD player", don't misquote me.

The Reon processing (along with the Realta in the Denon 3800) is important if you plan to use the BD player for standard DVD playback.

In terms of BD playback, the need for the chip can be debated. Over 99% of BD discs are authored as 1080p24, which means you don't really need to appy any video processing to the signal. There are a couple of discs that are 1080i, so converting those to 1080p60 needs to be done correctly, which most BD players do not do (including most of the expensive ones). Some of those 1080i discs (like NIN's BYIT) were sourced from 1080p30 material, which requires proper 2:2 processing, which most video processors don't do correctly.

The problem with the HQV solutions is the hit the chroma resolution seems to take. I don't know if they have a chroma filter that is just always engaged, but I've seen this issue with several players that feature HQV processing. I just got the 3800 in so I haven't had the chance to see if this trend continues with the Realta chip as well.

So whether or not this is important to the end user has a lot to do with what type of content you are watching. Personally, I think it is more important to have it in a A/V processor, video processor or in the display at this point. HD cable signals could benefit from the enhanced HD processing FAR more than BD signals.
