Default Have Problem and seeking Advice Round 2 (bad HDMI cable)

Hi,

I have a launch date 60Gb Ps3 that I bought Nov 27, 2006 (I came away from camping with a raincheck so it took a few days.)

Since the latest FW update I get noise from the audio. I don't know if the PS3 is messed up or my AVR is messed up because I've only had the AVR for a week.

Both are covered by warranty (I bought extended warranty for the PS3.)

I just talked to Walmart via the phone and they said I could bring it in for a refund. This would allow me to buy a 40Gb and have $200 left over for Blu Rays. This sounds fun,.. even if the PS3 isn't the cause of the problem.

My other option is to wait for a new FW to come out and try updating the PS3 again. I can't re-apply the existing FW because the PS3 says it's already up to date.

I can send out the AVR but I'm not sure I trust the people I bought it from and I'm not sure the AVR is at fault since this didn't happen till I did the latest FW update. And,.. I can use the AVR for other sources without trouble and if I use it with the PS3 via HDMI in STEREO mode it works.. just not any of the other modes.

I don't know what to do. .... Going back and getting the 40 sounds fun because it leaves me with extra cash for Blu Rays or maybe a couple of DualShock controllers but I'm not sure if I would miss the 60GB system.

-Brian

Unbearable loud noise like the signal being sent out isn't recognized correctly or it corrupted.

I wish I could substitute some other HDMI Audio device into the system and determine if the PS3 or the AVR is at fault.

The AVR seems perfectly fine and I was enjoy-ing the heck out of DTS MA titles all last week but since the FW update I only can use the HDMI with "STEREO" mode. Seems strange that DIRECT would not work but STEREO is fine.

Anyway... The AVR works with Toslink even from the PS3 or other devices. And it works in all modes from analog inputs too. I have a feeling the AVR is not the problem.

I thought about getting a cheap upconverting DVD player that I could return just to test with but I don't think those output audio from the HDMI connection just video.

I bought the AVR Refurbished and was thrilled when it showed up because I think it was actually new and it performed great. I've read about people having to wait months to get thier AVR serviced and I would rather avoid that if possible esp if the AVR isn't at fault.

I think the place I bought my AVR from is sending my a shipping label on Monday and will pay for return shipping which is not usual but since I've only had the unit a week they consider it DOA.

If I were to exchange the PS3 I could or would be able to have confidence that the AVR is truely at fault. Knowing that I would feel 1000% better about sending it away for repair. If it's broke I'll gladly put it in the process of getting a replacement or having it fixed. However,.. if it's not I don't want to go through with that.

I have a couple of Ps2 games,.. Tomb Raider Anniversary, Soul Calibur 2 and NFL 2k3 but I don't think I would miss being able to play them if it meant having a little store credit for buying Blu Rays with or maybe a extra controller or 2.

try restoring the system in the system settings on your PS3, I think this will reformat the drive and you can take it from there. I think you'll loose everything stored on your drive so save your files if you can.

I did that.

And I restored from a backup that I made sometime long ago. (didn't have game saves on it,... I'm not too concerned about that my PS3 is normally 99.9546% of the time used for Blu Ray and I don't care much for video games.)

No matter what settings you restore you can go backwords with the FW. For all I know the FW isn't at fault but may have not installed correctly.

Go to Best Buy and buy the ps3 and see if it works. If the problem still exists then its your AVR. And no you don't pay 15% restocking fee and can return the unit within 30 days of date of purchase.

Hey,

The more I think about it the more I want to just do a return to Walmart and buy the 40GB and pocket the $200 for Blu Rays. I imagine I can get 10 or more new blu rays with that $200 if I watch for sales.

I'm pondering what I'll miss from the 60GB....

*More hard drive space - Never would use it at it's fullest my HD only had about 20GB of junk on there.

*More USB ports - I only ever use 2 now at the most.

* No more card slots - don't need um anyway.

* No more PS2 games capabilities - Not a biggie. I hardly play maybe I can get a few bucks for the PS2 games I have and put that towords yet another blu ray movie.

* Lower resale value - yep... 40GB is the least valuable PS3 and that's surely a valid consideration.

* Loss of SACD playback ability - this is also a consideration for me. I only have 1 SACD but I love it. If my other SACD player ever bit the dust I would wish my PS3 could still be used for SACD.

I don't know.... Hmmmmmm...... I wish I knew if the AVR or the PS3 was at fault in the first place that would be a good start.

Jackaroo,

That's a fine plan but I could also just pick up a HD DUD player for $100 and try that and it would be alot less on the credit card.

But then... I would be exposed to HD DUD... no,.. I can't do it that way.

Maybe I can find a open boxed Samsung 1000 for testing with.

Did you go back into the system settings and make sure you have the correct sound options checked? I read somewhere on this forum that someone had to do that because if the wrong ones were checked they'd get a horrible noise or something like that.

I think it's the setting where it asks you if you want to select the 44.1Hz crap along with Dolby Digital and DTS. You can try messing around with that.

Yeah,

I went is and told it to only output 44Khz or something and only Dolby Digital.

That didn't work... I thought it would though... Maybe I'll go try fiddling with that again.

Don't you know anyone else who has a PS3? Even the slightest acquaintance through work or whatever? Just ask them if they want to come over to your place with theirs. Tell them that you will supply the beer and make a night of it. If nothing else, you may acquire a new friend!

Hey,

My neighbor is in 4th grade and has a PS3.

But,.. he is thick as can be and very hard to talk too. I offered him component cables because he has his PS3 hooked up to a HDTV via Composite. (I had extra component cables from when I moved on to HDMI.) He made it clear to me that he was already getting high def through his composite cables.

He tells me his Resistance Fall of Man disc is all scratched up and doesn't work anymore but I mention the scratch resistant coating and try cleaning it off but it's like talking to a wall.

They have high speed internet in their home but the PS3 isn't hooked up and I mention things like GTHD and updated FW but he doesn't want to hear about it.

His parents are worse... I won't go there to ask about this and he's right next door. Sorry to say it but that's the dumbest people I've ever met.

I do know someone with a Samsung first gen player and I've tried calling him. I'm going to try to track him down and borrow the player to test with. I helped him in the past with updating his FW so I think he's be cool with the plan.

Hahahahaha... the future is in the hands of the children. Maybe I won't test the boundaries of human longevity! Be ... be very !!!

Sounds like you need to walk over to your neighbours with some tranquilizer darts, knock them all unconscious, and hook them up properly. Then they will have no choice but to see how great the quality and functionality improves. Ignorance literally pisses me off.

Anyways, hope it all works out for the best.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the input so far.

I'm still trying to figure this out.

I did another restore and for the moment everything works but It seems to me like I'm only getting sound from the front 2 speakers...

I'm sure I'll figure this stuff out. Maybe I had a problem with my HDMI cable being somewhat loose.

Anyway,.. thanks all for the input thus far.

Hey,

found it and fixed it.

I had a bad HDMI cable.

Anyway,.. I'm happy I don't need to have either my PS3 or AVR fixed and I can go watch a movie.
