This utility updates the BDP-S1 firmware to version 1.50 and provides the following benefits:
* Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs
* Enhances playback compatibility with certain BD-ROM format discs
* Corrects the output signal status information for audio output and display when Linear PCM 5.1 channel soundtracks are played back via HDMI
I guess it's not yet for TrueHD and DTS HDMA.

Just an FYI, I downloaded the update. It downloads as an .exe file which you then have to run and it produces a *.iso file. Evidently you have to have software that will take the *.iso file and burn it to a DVD as an "image" disk if I remember what the support guy said correctly. Unfortunately my software will only support buring this type of file to a DVD disk as a 'data disk', which does not work for their update process. So if you have the correct software to take the *.iso file and burn it to the type of DVD they want you should be in luck.

If anyone is successful please let me know how it works, and if your BD-J features on Speed, LxG or The Descent work OK.

But it looks like I'm going to have to wait for them to send me a DVD in the mail to update my player. And then finally watch The Descent that I bought knowing that I would have to wait for the update...

Jim,

Trying using ImageBurn:

http://www.imgburn.com/

Its free and should allow you to burn your iso file.

I used my Sony BWU-100a burner + CyberlinkBDsolution bundle to update my player. This update does not yet fix the unplayability of BD-R/RE discs, but it is nice to see we will not have to wait for Sony to snail-well. As I was writing this, my other machine received an email from Sony that the update was available, would be mailed, and that that R/RE issue would also be released soon.

Default Descent now playable

It looks like the firmware allows the Sony to play Descent. I've just put it in the player and it seems to be playing (a bit slow to start up, but it plays).

Josh,

Thanks for the info. I did, and it worked. My player is now upgraded, and does indeed play the Descent.

However, slow is not the word. You have plenty of time to put the disk in and then go to the Kitchen, make a VERY large bowl of popcorn and come back just as it's getting to the main menu. But at least it does load and will play the movie. I still haven't figured out how to get the PiP feature to play, but will keep trying.

Also, the other disks are loading just fine, and the game on the Speed disk actually works now. Before I could watch the movie, but if I tried to go to the game, it didn't work.

Default Audio problems after Firmware upgrade?

Anyone else having problems with their 5.1 analog outs after the firmware upgrade? After getting all the setting adjusted back, 5.1 outs don't seem to be putting signal out to center channel or rear surrounds. You can't hear vocals on Crank for example unless you switch to 2 channel audio. This was working great before the update.

Yeah, The Descent takes a bit longer to load than other discs on all the players, due to the Java stuff and it's extra loading screen. Well worth the wait though!

When you select which version you want to watch, there is Unrated (UK), Rated (US), and a third option. This third option is the PIP.

Default BDP-S1 Firmware 1.5 update

I have a

BDP-S1
HDMI
DVDO-VP30
HDMI
R70XBR2

I updated the firmware to 1.5 this morning.
It appeared to go approximately correctly except
the drawer never went in again. Oh well.

Through the DVDO-VP30 I get the Blu-ray logo on the tv
and then the screen goes blue. Nothing on tv.
Press MENU on BDP-S1 and it shows menu but nothing on tv.
Spoke with Sony and we unplugged for three minutes.
Same thing. BD disc Stargate counts up but nothing shows.

Moved HDMI cable straight to second input on XBR2 and I got the movie.

I suspect there is a problem in the hand shaking between VP30 and BD.

HDMI and HD light come on on BDP-S1 so I think they see each other.

Fired off an email to DVDO with details.

Will see what happens next week

My update was not according to instructions, by which I mean the instructions from Sony are wrong. The drawer does NOT close again.I waited 30 minutes then gave up and turned the power back on (it went out when the tray opened). When I did so, the DL OK showed on the front panel
and I powered off and then on again to just make sure. I loaded The Descent and it played. (The Descent does have some white cross hatching
in a lot of the darker scenes - it shows up when the main camera seems to
be operating, at least when they switch to a different view, the cross hatch goes away, so I'm presuming its due to the camera).

Yeah, on the instructions it says that about 1/2 way through the drawer will open, you should not take the disk out, just wait and it will shut again and then finish the update, signaling it is finished by showing DL-OK on the front pannel. But it really just does the entire update without opening and reclosing the drawer. It takes about 15 minutes, and then at the end you see DL-OK and the drawer opens and then it powers down.

Take out the disk, and power back up and your done.

Oh, I see that does have a 'PiP' look to that version of the movie. But it really isn't what I thought they were talking about when they said that BD-J would enable them to add PiP features. I thought it would be more like on the TV where you can push a button and turn on the PiP and then push again to turn it off. Not that there would be a whole seperate version of the movie with a comentary window that is up all the time.

Maybe, when they get the software more refined, they can do a real PiP feature.

There isnt a seperate version of the movie on the disc. That is FUD spread by the wonderful retards at AVS. What it does do however, is it has the scenes which need PIP encoded on the disc, and then plays them back Via Seemless Branching, like DVD does. HD DVD at this time cannot do seemless branching. So it has the main film on the disc, and it also has some scenes with the PIP encoded into it, and it also has the extended scenes encoded onto it as well, and just branches to the scenes needed for whatever playback choice you select. Its genious, actually.
