Default Under what circumstances... would you buy a regular DVD now?

Would you buy a regular DVD now? Just curious as to why people would force themselves to buy a DVD now that we all love Blu.

I can already tell you a majority of these board members are going to talk all the smack in the world about DVD Video now that Blu Ray is out there. But in my opinion, DVD Video definately still holds its own weight. I was contemplating buying the new Master and Commander on blu ray, but after hearing that the PQ wasn't that great i just decided to go ahead and get the DVD. I've never seen the movie, so i went ahead and paid $4.99 for the regular ole' DVD at Best Buy. The movie was ok, but i'm really glad i didn't spend the $20+ on the blu ray. Therefore, buying the dvd saved me $15+!!!

Even though we all barely watch and purchase any regular dvd, I will only buy a dvd if there's no chance of it going to blu or its not worth buying on blu.

Well if the program was shot on NTSC or PAL video I'd probably buy the DVD

If it is something that I really want and I dont think it will be coming out on blu anytime soon, I would still get the DVD. Especially if I dont feel it is something that would not really benefit from being HD.

If it's like a really obscure title. Like I bought the DVD for the movie "Kids". Not a lot of people know about that movie, and I know it won't hit Blu-ray for a LONG time. It might not ever make it to Blu-ray sadly. Plus I'm keeping my DVD copy of Edward Scissorhands since it has extras that aren't on the Blu-ray. Other than that I'm just buying new releases, and waiting it out for my favorite catalogs to be released.

+1. Since sweeney todd is not on blu I bought it on DVD. hell dvd is much better then VHS right? Its much cheaper to buy a DVD now. Then when blu's go down in price or one of the titles I was dying for goes down in price. Then I will make the switch.

I buy them happily because alot of things that I like will not see blu ray or at least not for a very long time (horror films and british and other foreign films)
As they do see release on blu I upgrade.
I love movies, not formats.

Some movies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Dragon Wars, or Hairspray are on BD but why???? Like it's really going to make a difference watching Mrs. Doubtfire dancing with a household utility, watching someone spray soul glo on their greasy head, and most of all Dragon Wars was so horrible I should shoot that S.O.B. who came up with that idea of putting it on blu.

I buy indie flicks, docs, TV series that are still ONLY available on DVD (ie, I just bought the Wire 5th season and About a Son - a good Kurt Cobain doc) just because they may never see the light of blu-ray. I just wait for mainstream movies (though waiting for Sweeney Todd is just killing me!).

I will be buying Rescue Me Season 4 on DVD this Tuesday (along with Weeds season 3 on blu-ray!!!). You know why I am buying the DVD? Cause Sony is retarded and didn't release a blu-ray after releasing Season 3 on Blu-ray.

This is my first DVD puchase I believe since the Star Wars theaterical releases.

I have not bought a single DVD since I started collecting HD media.
I rent DVDs occasionally, but I don't think I will buy any anymore.

I bought a DVD for the first time in about 18 months last month because the movie was not available on Blu, I really wanted to see it, and Netflix for some reason had it on 'very long wait' status for 2 months before I finally gave up and just bought the stupid thing.

Steven Kings 'the mist'

so now that I have seen it,, anyone wanna buy or trade for it??

probably won't be buying any more dvd's unless they are Music ones that may not make it to Blu.

I'm alittle hessitant now about buying DVD's. Since i did pay all that money on a ps3 and 1080p telly and 5.1 surround...it seems kinda stupid not to buy the best quality media for it, does it not?
PQ is better, AQ is better, i still have all my DVD's (untill i buy the blu lol), but the DVD's that won't make it to Blu-Ray, i'm like everyone else on this thread, i'm cool with what i got.
So i think i'll only but Blu-rays from now on, but it won't mean that my DVD's are going to take back seat!

I never bought into DVD, since I held of buying a DVD player until I got a HDTV. Then I thought, might as well wait for Blu or HD DVD. I waited. Therefore I only have about 6-8 DVD's and over 60 Blu's.

Its a hard sell for me to get a DVD disc now, since if you know what your doing you can get almost the same quality from the internet on day1 of its release. I buy blu because it offers superior quality and I can't get it anywhere else at that quality. Buying Sweeney Todd on DVD might have cost you $10, Master and commander might have cost you $5. Thats $15 you could have put towards blu.

DVD needs to die quick.

I only buy TV shows on DVD now. I bought a few Uni DVDs last christmas because I didn't know how long I'd have to wait and Children of Men was just too good to pass up at $5

I've stopped buying some TV shows on dvd as well though. Like Desperate housewives - waiting for Blu.

House and 24 are the only HD shot shows I buy on DVD still I think - 24 because I'm a crazy 24 fan, and house because I have to keep the wife from buying movies on DVD (and I found them fairly cheap).

+1 and amen. For those on the fence, why not get a blockbuster or netflix plan and just rent till your hearts content for 20-30 bucks a month. Then, when the dust settles buy your favs on the best format available at the time and upgrade as you see fit. You'll find yourself with more money and a solid canon of movies.

TV shows and stuff that's unlikely to see Blu-Ray anytime soon.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie was my most recent DVD purchase.
