EA's John Madden Football 08 and moving on to 2009 - Blu-ray Forum

By now, everyone knows that Madden08 is the most traded-in game in GameStop/Electronic Boutique's history.

The question is, why? What made the 08 Edition of Madden Football so horrible?

In my opinion, it's the fact that the Madden development team feels the need to add a useless new feature every single year. From the Quarter Back Vision feature to the Newest useless feature, the "Weapons" feature, which actually allows Gamers to play WITHOUT learning or knowing which players are good, great or just average in real life. Do we really need a tornado icon under LaDanian Tomlinson to know he's a good player? No! Not if you're a football fan.

On top of all that, they turned the interception percentage way, way up. So far up infact, that the experts don't even pass the ball without jumping a wide receiver 12 feet in the air.

What do you guys think?

FWIW I played 07 and was very very dissapointed with 08 from a grahics point of view.. I got rid of mine within days.

08 is horrible. How they went so far backwards is beyond me. EA's gonna have to do something. I'm sure they lost a ton of fans.

I traded-in my Madden after about 2 weeks! And I've been in a Madden competition almost every year since 91. I came in 4th a couple of years ago in Philly and EA had my pic on the front web site. So, what I'm saying is, I'm a huge fan and I still hated it.

I'll give them 1 more year to get it right. Then, I'm done.

its cause its the same game every year, with a different dude on the cover and updated rosters.

i buy a madden game once every 3 years.

Actually, it would be good if they kept it the same and just updated the rosters. Instead they add some useless feature that everyone shuts off. LOL

I haven't bought a Madden since PS1. Hell I can remember playing it on the Genesis back in the day. I think we need an update to Tecmo Bowl or at least get the original for download on PSN.

When I first bought Madden 07, I couldn't put it down. When I bought Madden 08, and I played it for a few days and then I just stopped and haven't played since.

Some of the features are okay. They need to stick to what they did before-- the new engine is the problem. Also-- the announcer is so annoying. What happened to MADDEN? Even though we all hated his voice and repeated comentary, we all want him back now.

They need to redo the entire engine. There is no one thing. It doesn't feel like it used to.

Because EA has the exclusive license to the nFL, they will never have competition.

If you google EA, you'll see that they unexpected renewed this exclusive arrangement this week with the nfl through 2013. Many believe that last years 2k all pro football was a test to see if people had interest in their franchise again as they were going to bid for a new license for 2010, but EA snuck in AGAIN and made it so expensive that the NFL felt the need to reup w/o looking at other options.

Point is EA controls the block, so they don't have anything pushing them to make it better.

The graphics in Madden '08 are terrible. The Madden team should be shot for that. '06 and '07 looked almost photo-real. The lighting was great, the detail was amazing. '08 looks like a first-generation software offering.

I could've overlooked the weak graphics but the glitches and broken gameplay AI, combined with missing essentials like calling o-line protections, made me kick Madden '08 to the curb.

I went back to playing '07. I updated the rosters and I haven't looked back since. I'm going to rent Madden '09 and if the graphics still blow and the gameplay problem's aren't corrected, I will not be buying.

Even NCAA 08 was lackluster when compared to NCAA 07. And NCAA 07 was severely lacking when compared to NCAA 06. Their problem is that they really only redo the engine for the first game on a console generation, and then tweak it each subsequent year. That is why the last PSX NCAA game before the PS2 was outstanding. That is why the last PS2/Xbox NCAA game before the 360 (and then PS3) games was outstanding. I understand their need to add new features every year, otherwise why would anyone buy the game just for updated rosters? This has been the reality of sports games for years, but they need to realize that putting a pretty bow on top of a pile of trash doesn't make the pile of trash any better.

I actually liked NCAA '08 too. It even looked better than Madden this year because NCAA made better use of lighting and had progressive lighting which Madden '08 strangely lacked.

With that said, NCAA '08 could've been better. The graphics could definitely still be better.

Overall, both NCAA and Madden should be on the same level graphically and that level should be high. The technology and resources are there. There is no excuse for weak graphics anymore, especially when '06 and '07 versions had incredible detail. There is also no reason one game should look better than the other. They need to fire their graphics people because they clearly lack the talent necessary to get it done. They can't even get uniforms right in Madden, lol. What a joke.

I just have issues with EA's sports, they just seem to not want to be innovative, it seems as if they use the same source code from the previous game and add a useless feature, they are just simply dissapointing.

Same for me. EA knows what they're doing by releasing the NCAA game in July. That's about the point you're ready for some college football again (actually sooner really). I buy it every year and play out a season or two before TCU's first game each season.

If you play Madden, you are really just participating in one big beta test. They release a new engine each generation, and then proceed to tweak that engine every year until that generation is over. It really is a shame that EA feels like they do enough work to the game year in and year out to justify charging consumers full price every year. The ONLY time I can remember where they developed an entirely new engine mid-generation was when they made the transition from 2d sprites to 3d polygons on the PS-1. And that was only because Sony came out with a 3d polygon football game first and completely owned Madden that year.

Ideally, what EA should do is release a full game one year and then release a simple update the next year for roster changes, etc at a discounted price. Then just alternate doing that for the current generation. The years that EA releases the updates, they could be working on REAL changes and improvements to the game. Then they could release those versions at full retail the following year.

Bring back NFL Blitz. i loved beating the snot out of players after the end of plays. I have madden 08 and the controls and extras suck. I like 07. just improve graphics and update the rosters, and KEEP THE FRIGING CONTROLS THE SAME!!! o that pisses me off that the controls r sooo different.
