Default Are CG cutscenes a thing of the past?

I been noticing over the years how video games little by little have been doing away with CG cutscenes, and now using real-time cutscenes. over the years game CG cutscences were some of my favorite parts of the game. Games like FF7, Parasite Eve, and a more recent FFX had some amazing CG cutscenes, and did a nice job blending real-time and CG cutscenes. but now all you see is real time and its a shame, Because i Know the PS3 could create some stunning CG scenes. am i the only one that misses them?

Meh CGI cutscene were so different than in game graphics that it was killing the mood for me. Just to see how cool the character cool look just the return to those 40 polygons one was depressing (talking about PS1 here)

I prefer cut scenes to forced action! Then you can sit back and watch it unfold instead of hitting x over and over and over. It makes it more cinematic and enjoyable. They shouldn't though overpower the game and be endless, they should be more seasoning versus the whole of the game.

I saw Kung-Fu Panda last night and Ratchet and Clank isn't that far behind in terms of visual quality, so unless you are going to hire Pixar to do the cutscenes, no need for CG anymore.

I enjoy CG cutscrenes too, but we're getting closer and closer, soon the games will look like CG sutscenes. Although not many here care for the Xbox 360. Lost Odyssey has some great CG sutscences.

Square-Enix usually always tries to incorporate CG with thier games

For Lost Odyssey, it probably has to do with Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy) and his company Mistwalker with the help of feelplus.

Although I enjoy Square-Enix games, I feel Final Fantasy has lost some steam. Hopefully FFXIII will change things around. I also hope Square-Enix will bring back a game like Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS3. I would like some more TRPG.

I will say 2 things about this.

Systems have advanced so much, you can get close to the quality of a cut scene without ever loosing the flow of the game or changing the feel of it. Games like Uncharted and MGS4 are perfect examples, because you never see the characters all of a sudden look better than they normally do and the scenes are instant.

PS2 games, like FFX, have cut scenes that are better than any game we have out today. So you can always get better graphics from the game with a cut scene, they can focus more energy on the quality of them and the content, and use less space on the disc in many cases. They look great and it is always nice to see the characters look even more realistic than normally.

I am torn on this. I am ecstatic that cut scenes without CG have advanced to much that they look this fantastic! But I miss some of the good old days too that would showcase a title with spectacular cut scenes that looked like a movie.

I suppose eventually we will not need them at all, especially with the storage capacity on Blu-ray. This gives us a huge amount of flexibility with our games and keeps a consistent look and flow to the game, and even seamless transitions from cut scene to game play. I think we are at that point where some will still use them, and others will not. It looks like the CG cut scene is going the way of the Dodo and will go away completely some day, but that is a good thing right?
