Do You guys think people would have liked the 360 more if it had come out with full HD and a bluray player at launch?

i agree, even though its completely crap compared to PS3, but it would have made people think twice about buying PS3, sales would have been horrible for the PS3.

No, not for me anyways. I bought my XBox 360 for it's games at the time. I was undecided on a Hi-Def player. My DVDs were fine with me. That was near the 360's launch a couple years ago. But now, with the format war over and a clear-cut winner, I could see how it could affect new buyers. It all comes down to the games though.

Why are we digging up the past anyways? Plus, MS wants downloads to succeed.

As an owner of a HD Dvd Player and a Blu-Ray Dvd player, I can tell you that if Microsoft would have came with the HD Dvd player drive already installed like the PS3 did with the Blu-ray, I really believe they would have won the format war.

I think that's almost a given... they didn't want to pledge allegiance to any format, but if they would have backed HDDVD from the start, we'd all be on HDDVD.com right now.

Yes if 360 would have had hd-dvd installed in the 360 console we would be all on (or atleast a good % of us) hddvd forums. But honestly if i would have bought hd's for the 360 and then saw the exclusives on blu and bought a ps3 i think i would have still bought more blu then dud..........so maybe it;s wrong to say that hd would have won the format war..........BUT WE WON BABY!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong...but isn't HDDVD's lack of space non fixable? In other words, if a BD's 25G isn't enough, it can be multi-layered to 50G (and I've even heard 100G), whereas HDDVD's 15G was as good as it was going to get.
Then factor in the scratch resistant coating, (I've heard) better virus protection, and the fact that Xbox 360, at any given time, is operating at 90% power, while the PS3, running the same games almost as well or as well, is operating at around 30% power. (Which is why we're getting games like MGS4, Resistance 2, and inFAMOUS). I'm not trying to sound fanboyish at all, but the reason I decided I liked PS3 and BD better, at a time when EVERYONE was talking up HDDVD and 360, was because there was so much more potential. If M$ had been smarter, instead of worming their D/L agenda into the mix, there would have been more competition, but what we have now would still be superior. Not because we like it; we like it because we knew it was better. |

Yes, it would have helped 360 tremendously. I have a 360 anyway but it does not get near the use as my ps3. I'd say 99% to 1% useage ratio. I'm actually considering selling all my 360 stuff as the only game I wouldn't be able to get on ps3 that I want is Gears of War 2.

I believe if the 360 started with an HD DVD player, it would have been 200$ more, and priced at 600$ the 360 would have flopped and failed hard...afterall the PS3 is only recently starting to recover from the initial price tag, and the 360 didn't have the reputation coming in. The European, North American, and Australian sales would have tanked, the Japanese sales would have been even worse, and people would never have started seriously developing for the console.
As a result, I don't think it would have guaranteed an HD DVD win either. I think we'd still have the war to this day. Disney, Sony, and Fox would still be Blu-Ray. Universal, Warner, and Paramount would probably be HD DVD. High Def media never would develop, at least not these. Something else would step in to replace both HD and Blu. |

If the 360 would have released with HD-DVD let alone Blu-ray at the time that MS would have wanted it to launch, the system would have been at least $300 more then it launched at. And adding an HDMI at the time probably would have added more to the cost, but would have been nice in the long run since all new systems have it standard now. The system would have lost the head start and the price point MS was shooting for. The 360 is not a bad system for what it is, except for the stupidly high failure rate. While it may have been more appealing to people interested in HD movies, it would have cost too much at the time. Depending on how much MS would want to lose on each system sold. |

I agree that it would have probably been a lot more expensive and that would have hurt sales. I bought my 360 because I like the games. If I liked the games for the PS3 I would have bought that instead. It's as simple as that. I guess I'm one of the few people out there who still use a gaming console to play games on.

If Microsoft had waited to launch the 360 until either HD DVD or Blu-ray drives were available they would have lost their year-long headstart and completely screwed their position this generation. Also, the first HD DVD drives were relatively slow and they would have HAD to put a hard disk in every console to compensate (as Sony did)... thus driving up costs even more.
The system would have flopped being released so much later (with the PS3 launch impending) and at such a higher cost (equal to that of the PS3). HD DVD would still have died, and Microsoft's gaming devision likely wouldn't have survived much longer in its current form. Now then, if Microsoft had chosen to support Blu-ray and waited on that, they would have been doubly screwed. They would have had to delay until right around the PS3's launch, and then they wouldn't have been able to get enough drives to get the system out in any kind of quantity. (There was a shortage of optical pickup units and Sony was taking every one they could get for the PS3). So, then they would have had a really expensive system that couldn't hardly produce. It would have had no lead to market, and no advantage over the PS3. So, all things considered... they made the best play they could given the market conditions. They still should have put a hard drive in every console and shouldn't have rushed the QC process resulting in their horrendous failure rate, but they're about where they wanted to be overall. |

![]() Anyway you look at it MS biggest problem was/is the reliability and failure rate of the consoles. Just fixing these problems before launch would have went along way towards people liking the Xbox 360 more. |
