Default component placement

Sorry if this has been discussed, but I had questions about the best way to decide where to place my components to run my projector/sound with....

Here is the room..... not the best picture, but it was the only one I could find that had the part of the room I'm thinking about using, so I'll describe it as best as possible......

theater pic.jpg

You see my mother-in-law kinda doing the hand-motion of "you can use this space for storage" or something ridiculous like that

The wall you see with the light-switch/dimmer on the far right (that's cut off) is the wall with the stairs going down to the second floor.... you can see the white-wood trimmed "half-wall???" that is the other side of the stairs (you can't see the stairs, it's like an optical illusion b/c both walls look close together, but there are stairs between them) either way, Kinda cut-off is a ceiling fan, that will be removed, and the projector will be mounted there, projecting to a screen mounted on the opposite wall.... anyways..... This "Space" that my mother-in-law thinks is a good place for storage, I was planning on using to put my components, and then run the speaker wires under the carpet to the front, surrounds etc. I'll run an HDMI from that "room" just up the wall to the projector with wire-mold cover until I get someone by to run my permanent electrical/in-wall wiring (just run an extension cord for the time being too)

I know since I'll be using the PS3, the blue-tooth deal can start/pause etc. with the PS3 being behind me (the seating will be in the middle of that room, kinda under where my wife is standing with the bag/kid....) but I realize I won't be able to control the volume "on demand" without pointing the remote over my back shoulder.... I think I can make this sacrifice, as it makes my PS3 to projector connection so much easier (and shorter HDMI etc)

Does anyone have any major concerns about this plan???

Edit...

The open door you see is for another room, and I was planning on storing my media in there..... to the left of that door is a bathroom..... Next post will be a picture of the wall I'll be putting the screen on, taken from where that door is open, looking the other way.....

EDIT...

this isn't it.... the wall I'll project on would be to the left..... this was taken from the stairs I think.

Are you sure your mother in law is not pointing out where you should sleep ? Ha ha ! JK. I don't see a problem with the volume. Usally I am standing up when I get everything started moving around and checking the volume level on my Rotel. Sometimes I can't see how high the volume is because of the Salamander screens that shield the Rotel. Then when I know everything is just right I sit back and enjoy the show !

Why don't you get a RF universal remote for all your other components, then you don't have to aim it over your shoulder.

that's a good suggestion also.... since this "cubby hole" that was created by the need to have a ledge/wall for the stairs that come up there, and the fact that there is a chimney running inside that wall, combined with the slope of the roof, etc.... they turned the one side into a finished room, and this side is a smaller area, so they left it open like it is...... and it serves no purpose and I could do a good job of concealing the equipment rack, not worry about the nest of wires behind the receiver, and also free up space in the rest of the room.....

Only downside I can think of so far, is the fact that I was planning on putting a small bar in that area

I ordered 6 yards of Black-Out-Cloth, being sent to me by monday or tuesday..... can't wait to start my DIY project!!!!!!

Sounds like you've got a plan. I put my components on my left wall looking
toward the screen. I like only having the screen and speakers in front.

If you need any pointers on the screen, let me know. The DIY screen section
over at AVS has some very good info, also.

Beta,

The RF universal remote with an IR repeater idea mentioned above is a good idea. However, one interesting thing I learned about screens is that they also reflect infrared light along with visible light. If your receiver is behind you and its infrared eye is facing the screen, it may be able to see the remote IR signal if you point your remote at the screen much as if it was a TV.

Before I programmed my RF/IR remote (Harmony 1000 with IR extender), I found that I could control my ceiling mounted projector which was behind me by pointing the IR remote at the screen material and "bouncing" the IR. You might wanna give this a try to see if it works for you.

I ended up doing what Brain said, boucing the IR off the screen and it works just fine. My space is tight so my component rack ended up in the back corner opposite my screen. That put it behind, and partially blocked by my seating. I can control everything fine by just pointing the remote at the screen. The only thing is that I probably go through batteries faster than normal as this works less well when the batteries start to wear out.
