What audio will I be able to listen to while playing a Blu-Ray disk using optical out as opposed to HDMI.

Optical will let you do everything except DSD (SACD). Optical will let you do PCM lossless.

not true. you can only do 2.1 pcm over optical. anything "new fangled" can't be done over optical, only hdmi.

Then how come the PS3 lets me select all audio options using optical?

look back and tell me the exact options you see.

the problem is that optical simply does not have the bandwidth for multichannel pcm. your stereo can emulate 5.1, but it is not true 5.1. sorry

It's actually 2.0, no LFE channel is present.

That's correct...I checked my PS3 when I got home and sure enough, no option for multichannel lossless PCM.

One more reason to get that Sony ES preamp I've been considering.

What everyone is doing is selecting the uncompressed PCM track (which many if not most BDs have) and sending that to the receiver over dig. opt. audio and letting the receiver apply pro-logic. You lose the discrete surrounds but you get uncompressed audio at 4.6 mbps.

This is basically the quality LD audio that everyone has bemoaned the loss of with the DVD format.
