Don Cheadle replacing Terrance Howard as Rhodey

Don Cheadle is stepping in to replace Terrence Howard in Marvel Studios' Iron Man 2, says The Hollywood Reporter.

In the first film, Howard played Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, Tony Stark/Iron Man's best friend and future armor-clad hero War Machine.

The trade says Marvel had no comment, but sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons.

Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua's Brooklyn's Finest.

Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay for Iron Man 2, coming to theaters on May 7, 2010. Jon Favreau is returning as director, and Robert Downey Jr. is expected back as Stark/Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow also is expected to be back as Pepper Potts.

That's a bummer. I like the continuity of having the same cast in sequels...but oh well. I won't write it off unless Downey isn't coming back.

I wont even see it if Downey doesnt return. There is no better possiblility for Tony than RDJ

Terrence Howard better get his act together... Cheadle looks old as hell by comparison and will completely throw it off

Good thing Don Cheadle is an amazing actor. Back-to-back in Crash (IMDb #183) than Hotel Rwanda (#91) in 2004, he finally showcased his true talent potential.

I hate Terrance Howard so much! He was the worst part of Iron Man! Seriously....this guy can not deliver lines. He let fame get to his head cause of Hustle and Flow.

He demanded free food at the theater I work at....seriously...he makes millions and couldn't spend 8 bucks on nachos and a drink? What a jerk.

The guy makes his girlfriends wipe their asses with baby wipes. I'm serious! here is the link and quotes from an ELLE magazine interview! I mean come on! seriously! Stop giving this guy roles!

Don Cheadle is a great actor...I loved him in Hotel Rwanda. He deserves it. He doesn't look too old to me.

I didn't really care for Terrence Howard either . . . something about his voice and his delivery just kind of grated on my nerves. While Don Cheadle wouldn't have been the first person to spring to mind for the role, I'm sure he'll make the best of it.

Although Don Cheadle is an AMAZING actor and I thoroughly enjoy his performances, this news royally pisses me off. Terrence Howard has a real opportunity to shine with this character. For the most part, he is an actor that gets put in roles that are very straight forward and simple. With 'Iron Man' he was given the same buckle, but the War Machine aspect would have really allowed him to explore some inner conflict that would have proven himself. Many people I talk to didn't like the movie 'Crash', and subsequently, overlook his Oscar worthy performance therein.

Besides, Don Cheadle has the wrong kind of energy. Rhodes' character needs to stay the course of the military man until the moment War Machine is born. Don Cheadle will be War Machine right from his first on-screen moment as Rhodes.

I can see that. It happened with Dark Knight as well with Kate and Maggie, but that turned out ok.

I think it will be fine. It would have been worse if War Machine was introduced in the first. Then I could def see some pissed off fans.

I have to see Iron Man again since I really don't remember the affect Howard had in it at all. Maybe that was a sign? Also, his huge ego probably got in the way and he asked for way too much money.

As long as Robert Downey Jr is on board I am there. I have a feeling that Rhodey will play a bigger role in Iron Man 2 (just my speculation) so I don't have any issues with replacing Howard now.

Does anyone think this is a fake-out. When an actor wants too much money they show them they're expendable by spreading rumors of other actors taking the part. If the actor really wants the part, they'll lower their price. I really hope that's all this is. Not only do I hate when they replace actors but I thought he fit the role perfectly.

i also don't like it for continuity sake but cheadle is pretty awesome. i loved him in the ocean's trilogy. we'll have to see how it turns out.

I didn't like Terrance Howard in Iron Man as I found him to be too feminine and whiney. Don Cheadle is an amazing actor and will do the role justice as War Machine.

I agree. Downey Jr. really did well as Tony Stark. It would be very hard to replace him...if not impossible.

I like Don Cheadle better anyhow, but I would rather have character continuity over a better actor in this case.
