Cool E3 Back to Convention Center

Big E3 is Back

The Entertainment Software Association will be bringing back the high-octane version of E3 to Los Angeles next year, G4 TV's X-Play reported Monday night.

The confirmation comes two years after the ESA killed off the large, loud and expensive E3 format for a more "intimate" version in 2007 and 2008 that catered to a limited number of media and business attendees.

E3 2009 will once again take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, but take place earlier on the calendar, from June 2-4 next year.

The X-Play report said to expect "tens of thousands" of attendees at E3 2009.

At its height, E3 was able to attract 70,000 attendees. After the reconfiguration, that number dwindled to just a few thousand due to a more stringent vetting process.

Tickets to the event will not be sold to the public.

E3 2006 was the last time the event was the huge media circus loved and hated by journos and game companies. When the cost to make a splash at the event got too high, particularly with extravagant booths and other expenses, publishers became critical of the event.

But after E3 2008, game execs seemed to have changed their tune, saying that a small E3 had lost its relevance, and a large event that attracts mass market attention was needed for the industry.

X-Play said the ESA will make an official announcement tomorrow.

Tickets were never for sale to the public, E3 was always "industry only".

However, that system was abused, with third cousins of EB managers, etc etc getting entrance to the convention floor, which caused the crushing crowds and bloating that eventually killed the show.

And now this. The plot thickens...

a buddy of mine a few years back in college had an "inside source" and was able to get his hands on a few passes. so, a few of us were able to attend e3 that year (i think it was 2002 or 2003). it was super packed. the 'booth babes' were pretty whack-tastic. the best part of the show were the free goodie bags that most companies were handing out.

It seems E3 finally realized that it's the publicity to the fans that really gets word around, even if it is supposed to be "industry-only." Closing off the doors was a big mistake. Let's see if it's not too late for them..

Set up a fanboy website and pass it off as legitimate!

That's how it used to be done...

There's nothing wrong with making E3 big and bombastic. They just need to make sure that the actual GAMES are the center of all the circus, not celebrities and porn stars. And enough with all of the stupid secrecy. The "behind closed door" game showings are so pointless. We're not building military weapons here. If you can't show it to the public, don't bring it or mention it.

Also, if you're not a real "player" in the industry don't waste floorspace or people's time. No one wants to go to E3 to see some 2-bit start up company making electric keychains with built in laser pointers.

That's what made E3 so awesome. Seriously, it was the most accessible games convention and all players had equal footing, it didn't matter if you were EA or Ready at Dawn, everybody got a chance to network and build relationships within the industry.

The current format leaves that aspect dead, and we will never see this kind of stuff again.

It turns out that E3 needed the fanboys as much as fanboys needed E3!

Best year's for E3:

Last year for Dreamcast, the Ulala booth babe squad.

The year Extreme Beach Volleyball was announced. I got lei'd by Tecmo boothbabes.

I hoppe they find a happy medium.

The public MAKES the game. Without us they have nothing. If Comic Con can do it so can E3. E3 has LESS people than comic con and they manage.
