If it's between those 2 then get the macbook.
Sony laptops are way overrated and overpriced.
I've had 2 in the past 6 years and they definitely did not deliver!

Price wise. They are really expensive, but the components are not that high end. You might as well buy an HP or Toshiba with same components for 30% less...
My first Vaio broke after about 8 months. Some issue with the harddrive. I sent it in to get fixed and when it came back the hdd was ok, but the OS was all messed up. Tried to fdisk, re-install etc... didn't work, so they gave me a new one. That one lasted almost 2 years then, before the mainboard fried.

I was looking into getting a mac or a dell afterwards, but my wife got me a new Sony for xmas which seemed to be pretty good at the time. Have had software issues from the beginning with that one. Then got rid of Windows XP and intalled Linux on there, which seemed more stable and worked for some time, however I needed Windows back on there for a bunch of programs that were unavailable under Linux at the time.
This one lasted me about 3 years then, before it completely died.

I have a Dell for a little over a year now with XP and it cost me a lot less, and works like a charm. I am even doing some video editing on it, which the Sony locked up on me several times.

A friend of mine is using a macbook and he is more than happy with it.
We have an Imac at home, and as long as that one works I won't be needing any mac laptops.

I don't believe you can buy a Vaio with Linux preinstalled, and Sony doesn't provide Linux drivers for their machines. So, you'd be paying for Windows (which you don't want to use), and then installing an OS that doesn't have all the drivers you need to use everything. I'd say stick with Apple. Also, you can easily use OS X as your sole OS... Linux is still far too limited in applications (unless you start running Windows in a VM or really get into the nuts and bolts of Wine).

Sony and Apple are about the same really -- more expensive than other brands, but good looking machines. Given he doesn't want to use Windows, I'd definitely go Apple.

I have a Sony Vaio AR series with the build in Blu-ray drive. Of all the laptop computers that I've had, this one is by far my favorite.
It's got some great features and good designing to it.

If you want a Blu-ray capable laptop - VAIO with Windows... XP or Vista
Apple/OS X does not support Blu-ray playback - no one knows when it will either.

Linux - crapshoot. Also does not support Blu-ray playback.

Either machine will load and run Linux, drivers for the hardware(s) will be the only issue(s).

Since I own 4 VAIOs, I am slightly(Ha Ha) biased - as are the Apple fans.

Sony probably has the edge on models/sizes offered.

What are your size/hardware/capabilities needs?

Which one did you get?
And if I may ask how much did you pay for it?

I am thinking about getting my dad one, but am not really certain about pricing in Germany, plus my wife gets the student discount over here, so trying to weigh out which option would be better/cheaper.

Sony Vaio sucks. Overpriced, and poor quality.

I would suggest one of the IBM Lenovo machines.

The new Sony Vaio FW notebook I have has the best resolution for BD I've ever seen. It's quiet and runs beautifully. The screen is 16.5 " and films played in 16:9 with a screen ratio of 1:85:1 fill it perfectly. You can easily output to your home system and another monitor if you want.

This model was just released over a week ago and it's a fantastic buy.

As for Vaios...this is my third since 2000. Gave my previous ones to my parents and they still run really well. I think it's a great laptop.
