Default 2 questions regarding the PSN and wireless connection...

Question 1: If you have a wireless connection, where is it located? Close or far from you PS3?

Question 2: About how long does it take you to download a demo or game from the PSN?

The reason for these questions is because it takes me forever to download a demo, reasoning being is because my wireless source is kind of far.

...but I will change that soon

Answer 1: located about 8-12ft from my router.

Answer 2: I am able to download a demo/game in about 20 minutes give or take depending on file size and time of day.

Also, I have not had my router far away to test that, I live in a studio apartment. But my wireless has given me no problems with download speed.

My wireless is located kind of far, but I download a demo pretty fast. The difference between my wired and wireless isn't enough to make me want to run a wire into the room.

I get download speeds of 2MBs from my computer, which is about 40 feet from the router. Its a netgear router. 15x 10x speed type. My PS3 probably averages about half that. A 300MB file takes about 10 min or less. This is estimated though. My last router was a linksys and the EA servers hated it..lol

Last edited by becomingwater; 08-04-2008 at 08:51 AM. Reason: should be 40 feet

I have Time Warner Cable and my modem is probably a good 20 feet or so and I get a 30-38% signal strength. Put I will be putting a modem next to my PS3. The reason I was asking is because it took fooorreeevveerrr to download the Haze demo. But I think that was the reason. Thanks for the input and posts

It sounds like you need a 802.11n router.

I have my router about 15-20ft away and behind a wall and i get 100% strength (according to the PS3). I cant help you on DL times as i usually "set it and forget it" but playing online matches and such always goes off without a hitch.

Yeah that wouldn't make a difference that you could see. It sounds like you have interference between your Wireless Access Point (Router, not your Time Warner Modem) and your PS3.

Here is a good place to read up on how you can improve your signal.

Umm, 802.11n is backwards compatible with b/g standards. Plus, it extends range and increases throughput over distance. That's why I suggested it.

I use it. My router is over 50ft. away from my PS3.

BTW, you buy 802.11n routers from electronics stores like Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, CompUSA, Radio Shack, Wal-mart, etc.

Does the PS3 support 802.11N?

Edit: Nevermind, just saw your post.

To piggyback off the OP's question, is the PS3 like a laptop? Meaning if you're anywhere near a wireless connection, you can use said wireless connection? Meaning if you set up a router connection at home, but you take your PS3 with you over a friend's house, could you set it up for two separate routers or just for one?

You will have to setup the new connection in the settings menu, but you can connect to any available wireless network. I have had my PS3 connected to multiple networks (just not at the same time!)

umm.. just because the router is backwards compatible, doesn't mean the PS3 would be able to use the advantages of the 802.11n, in your case extended range as that only applies towards 802.11n devices which the PS3 is not.

To make it easier to understand, that would be like saying you could buy a PS2 system, and use PS3 games since the PS3 is backwards compatible, both devices have to be using the same standards to take advantage of the standard, whether that standard is PS3 games or 802.11n range/speed standards.
