Thumbs down PS3 stopped playing BD's (but NOT DVD's)!

Has this happened to anyone? When I load a BD.... the ps3 tries to recognize it but fails every time. At first it wouldn't play some BD's but now it won't play any BD's AT ALL. It WILL quickly load and recognize dvd's though. I thought it may be a dirty lens but it loads dvd's so quickly. Does the ps3 use the same optics for both formats? I tried a complete restore and it didn't help. Anyone heard of this problem? Any help or info would be appreciated! It is out of warranty and I have a brand new unopened Sony S300 ready to take the ps3's spot but I am thinking of returning it due to the lack of the s300's HD audio output.

Do you at least get audio? If so, there is a solution for that problem. You have to disable the 24Hrtz or something from the Display Settings.

Huh? Did you even read my post?

Thanks Andy. It did happen shortly after I updated the firmware. Does anyone know if sony will help me......even though I took the cover off and voided the warranty(like a dumb ass!). I thought I might be able to clean it or something. Knowing sony and the *******s that they are......I'm screwed with a 5 month old machine.

Also, I figured the restore would roll back the firmware.....but it didn't. That's strange!!! Maybe Sony can walk me through it on the phone to fix it. Then they wouldn't know cover was removed. What do ya's think?

Why did you ask me if it had sound when you read that it doesn't even RECOGNIZE the disc? Thanks for trying to help though.

You're welcome. You're best bet though would be to clean the lens or send it to Sony.

this just happend to a friend of mine who happens to be a 360 fanboy and he bought one b/c of the bd playback and i told him games were awesome on the ps3......yea i didnt hear the end of it "my 360 never died on me.....what a crap system".....the irony is that everyone elses 360 has died on them and their ps3 are working hard and good. anyway i think this is a firmware update flaw that causes the ps3 to do this, right now there are about 10-20 ps3's on ebay listed as broken and they all say "will not read bd's but will read dvd's". i wish i could explain why this is happening but i dont know. all i know is that sony said they would fix his free b/c he's only had it for 7 months (still under the 1yr factory warr.). the best i can figure is that the new firmware screwed up the bluray drivers.

Default Rolling back firmware?

Can this be done? I restored my ps3 hoping to roll back firmware..... and no dice!!! Still has newest firmware. How is that possible after a restore/reformat?

Because the firmware resides on the chips and not on the HDD. That is why each firmware is only 100Mb or thereabouts.

So there is no rolling back firmware. Why would you want to do that anyway?
