Default yamaha and dts-hd/true hd

my father was concerned if his new RX-V663 reciever will display the DTShd-MA or TrueHD on the front display of the unit hooked up via PS3 thru HDMI. Cheers for all info

Unfortunately no. The PS3 internally decodes the TrueHD and DTS MA signals and sends them out as PCM, not Bitstream. The front of his receiver should say Multi Channel PCM. Tell him he can check to see what is being decoded by hitting the info button on his PS3 while a movie is playing and in the top right corner he should see DTS MA, Linear PCM, TrueHD, Dolby Digital, etc. Good Luck. P.S. make sure he's got his HDMI audio set to Linear PCM and his 663 is set to Straight.

I can second that. Makes me sad. I wish the PS3 would send bitstream or the receiver would know what PCM was being sent and illuminate the appropriate audio codex.

I just picked up a Pany BD30 for this reason. I still love my PS3, but I like seeing the DTS MA and True HD show up on the display. I also didn't think I'd hear a difference with the HD Codecs bitstreamed vs. internal decoding, but the proof if in the pudding. Bitstream all the way!

I didn't buy a PS3 exactly for the same reason. i wanna see the DTS HD Master and True HD Logo displayed on the display of my receiver (In my case an Onkyo 605)..
Sadly, the Sony PS3 only puts out the HD Formats in PCM, which results in the same sound quality but you'll never gonna see the logos..
Get the Samsung BD-P 1500 or the panasonic BD30..
Also you should take in account that the drive of the PS3 is really not the best one around anymore
