Hey,
I could really use some help. I've learned a lot putting together a system but am getting hung up on one item. I'm using a Panasonic DMP-BD10A and a Sony STR-DG1000. I hooked up cables from all 8 blue-ray analog outputs to the receiver inputs. When I switch the receiver to "multi in" it still controls speaker levels. So I'm leaving all the speaker levels on the blue-ray at "large" and "0db". Anyway, I discovered DVD-Audio and I love it. The only way it works is through the analog outputs. It sounds great, but bass is kind of low out of the subwoofer. I usually crank it up a bit. The big problem is Dolby True HD and DTS HD (I know my blue-ray can't decode DTS HD Master Audio, and my receiver can't decode anything but Dolby, DTS and Dolby surround). Problem 1: I thought that if I switch the audio output on the blue-ray for True HD or DTS HD to pcm, it will send the decoded surround signal to the receiver through the HDMI. But it does not. I get a 2 channel signal. Problem 2: If I send True HD or DTS HD thorugh the analog outputs I get surround, but nothing from the subwoofer. (If I play regular Dolby 5.1 through the analog outputs, the bass from the subwoofer is fine). I've tried Panasonic support a few times, and I'm sure you're aware that is a complete waste of time. Any ideas? Shouldn't I be getting True HD and DTS HD though HDMI when I switch blue-ray output to PCM? I'd really appreciate the help. autotech |

Well, it can't decode or bitstream DTS-HD MA, so on that you're only going to get the DTS lossy core.
It can't bitstream TrueHD either, but it CAN decode it. Try selecting PCM and trying a TrueHD track. My understanding in analog outs is that the receiver does not automatically pump a +10db like it does with HDMI and the other typical inputs. As a result the bass is way lower. Perhaps cranking up the output on the receiver end to compensate? |

If I set the blue-ray audio output to PCM for DTS HD I only get a 2 channel signal at the receiver, via HDMI. I'm tesing it with "First Blood" set to DTS HD, and I get surround if I send it from the analog outputs, but with no bass from the subwoofer. Cranking up the level doesn't seem to help.
I just wish I could get the decoded surround signal through HDMI. |

No, only DTS ES and 96/24 on the receiver. But I thought the whole idea was setting the output at PCM so the blue-ray decodes and sends it to the receiver. If I had DTS HD on the reciever, I could use bitstrem and decode it there. Right?
It seems that anything sent to my receiver is 2 channel. What decode would the receiver display if it was receiving DTS HD which it doesn't support? |

OK. This blu-ray must be different than most. I found in the docs that setting audio output to PCM with either True HD or DTS HD sends a "2 Channel" signal to the receiver. So much for that idea.
The problem now is the fact that decoding through the player, with analog outputs to the receiver, plays in surround but no bass at all from the subwoofer. The fact that a DVD-Audio plays prefectly through the analog outputs eliminates a hardware problem with the player or the receiver. I've recently updated to firmware version 2.5. I wonder if I got a bad download or something. Does anyone know how to start clear on the software and reinstall the latest update? |

Wrt your getting two channels, guessing you are outputting the HDMI audio signal to your TV which is then telling the receiver and/or the DMP-BD10A that your system only supports stereo. If this is the case, turning off HDMI audio output from the receiver to the TV may be the solution you are looking for.
Your HDMI audio for the DMP-BD10A needs to be on, and set to PCM for the hi-def sound. Also, there is a LFE bug with the DMP-BD10A, so somehow you need to compenstate by bumping up your sub level by +10dB. (AvsForum thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=756879) [Kinda vague, but it's been awhile since I've tampered with my settings. More clear and accurate answers at avsforum.] |
