why do people buy blu-ray players

sorry but i am sort of confused, by why people buy blu-ray players for there tv's, its kinda funny really my freind buys all that stuff, he has spent thousands of pounds on these things, but the funny thing is he uses his blu-ray player on his computer when i showed him what to do he now uses that and watches his films and stuff on his computer which is conected to his tv and his computer monitor the reason is blu-ray players (not the blu-ray drive in his computer i mean) dont play all formats, so why buy it if it dont play divx, divx hd, wmv, mpeg-2, mpeg4, so on and so on a player, should play either all or all the normal ones, well the one's the public want, i mean is this not just common sense to support as many as pos.
