Default Does anyone accually remember this Disney movie?

The sequel to the much beloved Aladdin, it was created after Disney decided to close all holes (or so they thought) in the first Aladdin, plus make more cash.

I never seen it before but I've heard bad things about this movie, which is rare for somethin' that comes out of Disney. Wtanoto and other Disney fans, can I have your say on this?

I thought it was pretty good, although sans Robin Williams if I remember correctly.

I had it on laser disc. It was decent, but Genie just isn't the same without Robin Williams.

If I remember right Dan Castelano (sp?) the voice of Homer Simpson does the genie in that one.

It's okay as far as direct-to-video stuff goes -- as someone here said, better than the third, not even within 100 miles of the first. As with all DTV Disney animation, it's farmed out to the Asian animators who do about 1/3 of the frames the traditional Disney stuff has, so it looks *much* better on the small screen than the big one (so don't be showing it off on your projection system :>)

Yeah, the third one is called The King Of Thieves:

Robin does the voice of the Genie in this one.

The animation in both is pretty bad -- I think one of the worst things that ever happened to the Disney studios was the success of Return of Jafar. It was essentially the three-part "pilot" of the animated Aladdin syndicated TV series, following in the footsteps of DuckTails and Tale Spin (which also aired with a three-part "pilot" for network broadcast as a "movie").

So Disney decided to try and do a direct to video instead of a network broadcast, and the title sold like hotcakes. Disney immediately began producing more of these cheaply made direct to video titles (later branded "cheapquels" by the animation community), and their effect on the marketplace was devastating.

These cheapquels created a glut in the animation marketplace, removing the "event" status of a Disney animated title. The lack of quality was so apparent, the cheapquels also degraded the hard-won value of the Disney brand name in animation. The mantle of "best animated studio in America" was taken by Pixar, while Disney's grosses for their new animated films declined lower and lower.

Eisner and the entertainment media seemed all too happy to place the blame on hand-drawn animation, thinking audiences no longer cared for moving drawings in favor of CGI. The truth was the marketplace was glutted with cheap fare, the cheapquels had eroded the value of the Disney brand name, and the hand-drawn features had become stale and formula-driven.

If I were CEO of Disney, I'd see to it that every print and every negative of every cheapquel title was destroyed. So fans of The Return of Jafar, be gald I'm not CEO of Disney.

RoJ was Disney's most successful direct-to-video release, and isn't all that bad, IMHO. I'd pick it up on Blu... would be nice if Disney bundled all 3 together, tho.

Aladdin is my favorite animated Disney movie of all times. I wasn't crazy about return of Jafar. Actually, I didn't like it at all. Aladdin and the Prince of Thieves was okay, we got to meet Aladdin's father, Aladdin and Jasmine were finally gonna get married...it was acceptable.

That was a great movie, i was less impressed by the 3rd, although you can never beat the first movie. I hear that Aladdin is coming to blu-ray some time although no news of late or even a release date.

I pretty much agree with you, but didn't the gazillion Land Before Time sequels from Universal kickstart the cheapquel trend?

EDIT: looks like LBT2 and Return of Jafar came out in the same year...

And, we finally found out what happened to that marketplace storyteller, who disappeared five minutes in the original film...

It was a bad film when it came out...but then Disney started putting out sequels for every damn classic disney film...suddenly this one wasn't so bad anymore.
