Default I need some Receiver Advice...Please.

Okay, so my old HTiB died today. I was pretty much just waiting for it to go out before I bought a new receiver. I really would like to have the Onkyo605. I wish they were still in stores. Anyway. I know the 606 is the newer model, but it's out of my price range right now.

I went to CC tonight and saw two receivers that pricewise, are a good fit. However, I don't know how they will go with my PS3 and Sharp Aquos.

Denon:

Denon 7.1 Dolby and DTS Home Theater Receiver
Model #: DEN AVR788
In store price $250

Onkyo:
Onkyo TX-SR506 7.1 Dolby and DTS Home Theater Receiver
Model #: ONK TXSR506
In store price $299. Online $250

Will I be able to get HD sound out of either of these. I believe they have passthrough HDMI, but I'm not sure exactly what that all means. The rep told me to run my PS3 to my TV with one optical cable to the receiver. That way I get everything from the TV coming through the receiver...audio wise.

I am also watching an auction on Ebay for an Onkyo 605.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Optic won't get you any of the HD audio codecs. The guy at CC has no idea.

just find a receiver with an HDMI input that will pass audio and video. The PS3 will do all the decoding.

This Sony will accept PCM and is in your price range. You can probably still find a used 605 in your range as well.

The 606 is $320 shipped (see my sig below.) And yes, it comes with Onkyo's one year warantee (certified reseller) and you can buy a 3 or 5 year extended warantee if you wanted to.

That is a great buy. But let me ask you...the sony from above, with the PS3, would the sony do what I need it to...uncompressed (since ps3 does it). CC has the Sony for $250. I'm just asking.

The Sony would work, yes. I will say that most who compare head to head the Sony receivers to the Onkyo receiver prefer the Onkyo's. The 606 has a nice selection of features too I'm sure you've seen. If anything, the 606 should be compared with the 820 or 663 from Yamaha.

You know, I always liked Sony's stuff before I came to this site. I have seen a ton of posts about the Onkyo. Which is why I want that one. It almost seems to be the official bluray.com receiver.

For $70 more, I don't know if I can convince my wife that I will need the extra features though.

Thanks for all your help guys.

The Sony is a good receiver, if you can spare the 70 dollars get the 606. For that price, it is hard to beat...

The Yamaha 663 is worth looking into. I am a bigger fan of Yamaha than Onkyo. Personal thing. I couldn't tell you why, just am.

Awesome receiver, I would be hard pressed to find one under $320 though...

Agreed. But I would wait for it because of my bias.

If you plan on staying with the PS3 and letting it decode HD audio for you - you can save some money - and gain some quality by going with the Marantz 4001 at this link http://www.accessories4less.com/make...urround/1.html

How does the Marantz compare with the Sony above. Both prices are the same.

Much better than the Sony that does the same for the same price. I have the itching for some bitstreaming or I probably would have gone that route...
