Movies with cop-out endings

The other day I was rewatching Lady and the Tramp and something in the ending really disappointed me:

[Show spoiler]Trusty is hit by the City Pound wagon. He lies under the wheels, totally immobile. Jock walks to him and begins howling to death. Fade to black and - hey Trusty is alive and only has hurt his leg!

This is discussed even one of the featurettes of the DVD.

Another one: Spielberg's War of the Worlds:

[Show spoiler]The elder son goes to the battlefront, which promptly gets incinerated. Eventually, Tom Cruise and his daughter arrive to the in-laws' house, and everybody is totally okay there - including the son!!

I constantly change my opinion about the end of Matrix Revolutions.

[Show spoiler]The Squiddies are on mass outside zion, just about to kill everyone. But Neo makes a "deal" which ends the war.

[Show spoiler]so a single explosion supposedly stops every zombie laying seige on the house (either by killing every zombie with a couple blocks radius or creating a fire that burns throughout the night), but the explosion and/or following inferno doesn't scratch the two kids on the other side of a door mere inches away?

[Show spoiler]The beginning of the movie got me hooked, and made for some great suspense, until you make it that same scene later in the movie, and then it drops to just an average movie almost instantly once the chick lives

If any of that made sense. Although it wasn't the end of the movie.

[Show spoiler] how is that a cop out? The matrix had been overrun by Smith and The Matrix couldn't solve the problem. In the real world the Sentinals or whatever were going to take over Zion and before they could do that Neo went to The Matrix and offered to take care of Smith for them.

The Matrix at the point realized that mankind and robots could live in peace and were even willing to sacrafice for one another, so there was no point in killing off mankind.

I would definitely agree that Crystal Skull had a cop-out ending, and would probably rank pretty high on the list of films that were entirely mailed in banking on nostalgia of the past rather than a good creative direction moving forward. That along with the most recent Star Wars movies.

I just felt empty after watching Crystal Skull, particularly at the end. It was a thoroughly vapid film. This is my opinion of course, but this appeared a gateway for a new franchise starring Shia LaBoeuf rather than the latest adventures of Dr. Jones.

Shia won't be the next Jones, Lucas and Spielberg recently were interviewed and confirmed that. Jones will still remain the main character in the next movie

Branden, while I'm a little confused about what you're saying, try watching the alternate ending on the BD. I find it far superior. It avoids the situation you're talking about.

It had a cop out ending, because it didn't have an ending. The credits just roll.


Also, Judge Dredd had one. The movie was decent up until

[Show spoiler]the bad fight scene and cheap special effects of the statue of liberty at the end. I swear they just all of a sudden ran out of a budget for the movie, and had to finish it quick and cheap.

That's exactly the route I would have taken.

And change the name for christ's sake. "Kingdom of the unnecessary sequel" sounds so much better for what it is.

While I don't agree that No Country's ending was a cop out, I can definitely see where you come from when stating it. To me the ambiguity referred to Jones' opening monologue about being old and what happens when you get there. I can definitely relate with your POV because the ending was neither visual, nor dramatic, nor really cathartic in any meaningful way.

Another classic cop-out ending is Superman: The Movie.
