Wow, I'm the first to say No Country for Old Men.

It had a cop out ending, because it didn't have an ending. The credits just roll.

Also, Judge Dredd had one. The movie was decent up until
[Show spoiler]the bad fight scene and cheap special effects of the statue of liberty at the end. I swear they just all of a sudden ran out of a budget for the movie, and had to finish it quick and cheap.

While I don't agree that No Country's ending was a cop out, I can definitely see where you come from when stating it. To me the ambiguity referred to Jones' opening monologue about being old and what happens when you get there. I can definitely relate with your POV because the ending was neither visual, nor dramatic, nor really cathartic in any meaningful way.

Another classic cop-out ending is Superman: The Movie.

[Show spoiler]An earthquake kills Lois Lane and tons of people. Good thing Superman suddenly remembers he has the ability to fly so quickly that the Earth’s rotation will reverse itself. As we all know, that makes time go backward.

Not a movie, but the first season of the TV show Witchblade had a huge cop out ending.

[Show spoiler]The main character uses the Witchblade to reverse time to go back to just a couple hours before the first episode. So guess what, that entire season that you just wasted time watching, now doesn't happen.

Also phenomenon,
[Show spoiler]John Travolta gains super intelligence and telekinesis, turns out it's actually a brain tumor and he dies.

My interpretation was
[Show spoiler] the whole set of supernatural happenings in the movie was in his imagination

I'm not going to use spoilers because it's obvious by the thread title that if you don't want a movie spoiled you should steer clear of this thread.

I have to disagree with Heat. It's one of the most satisfying endings to a movie I've ever seen. I love the fact that De Niro and Pacino only share the screen twice in the movie. The scene in which De Niro and Pacino have coffee in the diner together to explain where each one stands is brilliant and and an excellent buildup to their final scene where they have a showdown at the airport. I wouldn't change a thing about that movie. It's a masterpiece.

Although Collateral is Mann's weakest film IMO, I still think he's one of the best and I have yet to see a bad Michael Mann film. I think it's atrocious that they even remade Manhunter which is a superior film to Red Dragon.

What spoiler did I give away. That there is text on the screen at the end of Unbreakable? I am sorry if that ruined the movie.

Oh by the way, Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father.

Edit:
I see what you did there. You were not ragging on me, just prefacing your nonspoiler tags.

NCFOM for me. I get it...it's not a country for old men, but it could have gone into more detail except just the credits. I hate movies that leave the ending for our own interpretation. WE PAID FOR THE MOVIE AND THAT'S YOUR JOB!!!

Sideways was great. The four leads gave great performances.

Beats "anti-shark spray" by a mile though.

Wow, a reference to the 1966 Batman with Adam West.

I felt like the movie ran out of money and they just said let's end it here.

The only big discrepancy between the book and the movie is that in the book Chigurh is sitting in the parking lot watching Sheriff Bell go back to the scene of Llewellen's murder. That's the only problem i have with the movie, is that the scene between Bell and Chigurh is so open to interpretation. Was he in the room, but somehow escaped? Was he in the next hotel room waiting? Who really knows? Not sure why the Coen brothers chose to deviate from the book in that regard. Also, in the book Chigurh returns the money to the real owner.

I personally like the fact that there's never really a head to head showdown between any of the main characters. It's like the Coens/McCarthy chose to conform to several genre stereotypes and then decided to blow those preconceived ideas out of the water.
