United Kingdom Godfather Part II glitch

Hi,

at 1:31 the movie starts to hang up. I read on amazon.co.uk that this is a common problem and seems to be a bad batch. How are your experiences? Are there any that do not have the glitch? Has anybody bought it recently and still has the glitch?

I had the glitch. I returned it and was sent another one which was fine.

Sorry to double post, but I got this email from Amazon today:

Quote:
Dear Customer,

We are contacting you regarding your recent order referenced above for the following item:

-------------------------------------------------------
TITLE: The Godfather Trilogy [Blu-ray] [1972]

ASIN: B001E25MBK
-------------------------------------------------------

We have been made aware of a potential manufacturing issue with the title you purchased from Amazon.co.uk.

Possible affected units can be identified by the catalogue reference BSP2032 appearing on the spine of the outer slipcase holding all four discs, coupled with the barcode reference 5 051368 203232 appearing on the underside of the outer slipcase.

One of the discs in this boxed set: "The Godfather Part 2" may not work properly on your Blu-ray player.

The symptoms of the possible fault are that when watching the main feature of "The Godfather Part 2", the disc freezes at around 1hr 40mins and skips content before resuming play some 15 minutes later.

If you have experienced the symptoms described above when trying to playback "The Godfather Part 2" Blu-ray disc from this specific boxed set, please contact Rebecca.Sparrow {at} Technicolor {dot} com who will provide you with details of how to return the faulty disc 2 and receive a free replacement disc.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and for using Amazon.co.uk.

Warmest regards,

Customer Service Department
Amazon.co.uk

Likewise. FYI, the replacement I got from Amazon a few months back has the exact same barcode and catalogue reference number as mentioned above but does not have the glitch.

I wish i bought mine from amazon, i got my boxset from ebay it was brand new and sealed. I too had the second disc faulty issue. At least I got a tenner off. So not too bad I guess.

There is some news for people like me who cant return the boxset, paramont are releasing the godfather part I and II in single disc versions in the saphire range. It should be out in the US but its not region A locked from what I have heard. Im not sure when it will make its Uk Apperance.

The US release is Feb 2010

Btw when contacting that person, can you only send it back if you bought it from a proper company like amazon? or can you send it back even if you purhcased it from ebay? Does any one know?

Did you notice that there was an email address for swapping the faulty discs directly with the manufacturer? No matter where you bought the set, I would think you could email Rebecca.Sparrow {at} Technicolor {dot} com and swap the faulty disc for a new one.

Yep I noticed that after i typed it

It's funny when i initially found out I had the problem, I phoned paramount Uk up and they wouldn't deal with me. They advised me to send it back to the company. Which i couldn't really do as it was the only copy they had.

Well I have now emailed Technicolor, hopefully I will get a copy thats working and I will be very happy! :-)

Play are offering the box set for £15 and am highly tempted but this glitch with Part II is worrying.

IF there is a glitch I can email that person and get a new copy right? Have people had a replacement sent to them that works fine?

Hmmm. I've not watched mine yet, but my copy is the HMV Exclusive version.

Might spend the weekend watching Part I & II*.

Such a terrible life

*No problem with "3" as I binned it the minute I got it. Works perfect in the bin. I'd rather watch Smokey and The Bandit 3.

Phew, what an experience. Spent all day watching I & II back to back. Movie heaven First time I've seen this since the 'restored' DVDs.

First, this is my disc from HMV:

No glitch. 100% spot on via my PC Bluray LG ROM.

One thing I have to say, Coppola should have left the sound alone in the first film. It's a f****** mess. All over the place sonically. It should be much more 'flat'. Lots of examples where it's so bad it sounds like a radio workshop on how to make sounds for blind people. One scene was really bad and that was when James Caan/Santino 'Sonny' Corleone beat the crap out of the guy with a dustbin. Very very poor FX and this was repeated throughout the film. It reminded of those 15 year old Yamaha ProLogic amps people used to feed VHS through and set it to "Cinema" or "Hall". Sadly like the brightness they seem to think boosting things = good. Film actually looked like a HD HBO TV show sometimes. They'd killed the darkness and grain which was always there (for me).

2nd film's sound and picture (still too bright on occasion) is much better.

Overall I'd have to say these are the worst Blurays I've ever seen. Nothing to do with the capicious Bluray format but the incessant tinkering of a director with nothing to do with his time other than sit on a edit machine 35 years after the film was already a masterpiece and quaff his wine at his once great stature as a filmmaker -alas now just another overweight and overbearing scanning pixel digitiser.

Besides those complaints, it's still a wonderful experience of cinema.

Unless you can get hold of the original film elements and have a 35mm cinema setup I'd highly recommend these Blurays. Not the transfers, just the films.

Interesting: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRe...on_blu-ray.htm ...and the reviewer ends with...

"My advice: review the restoration featurette first."

No. I sat down to watch the best possible representation of the films. Not overly-digitised and redone and redone and redone brightness/colouring and then recoloured lazy production processing by people getting paid too much.

These are supposed to be films. Not videos.

I'll be putting the extras disc in the bin where the 3rd film went. I don't want people trying to explain why they need to be employed 30 years later to make something look worse.

The US set features the original mono audio on parts 1 and 2 - the new remixes feature different foley work, so are not a good option for those who want to hear the films with their original sound fx, music mix, etc.

Why on earth Paramount decided to leave these off the UK set is beyond me.

Well, that's exactly what you got. Maybe you should've paid a little more attention to the restoration featurette you're so eager to criticize. You're crazy if you think these movies don't look filmlike at all.

I can't even begin to imagine what point you're trying to make.

"Video" was not a part of the equation here - they weren't even doing the restoration specifically for a BD release. The restoration was done to save the original film elements, which were in danger of deteriorating to the point of no return. The restoration team, that you feel the need to insult, spent years working to get the film as close to its original condition as possible - original look, sound, etc. They even took great care to make the subtitles look exactly like they originally did. They did not tweak the color or grain or whatever to modernize it.

The only reason you have the "best possible representation" in your hands in the form of a high-quality Blu-ray release is because of the work of the restoration team.

Thank you for that excellent comment. Nice to see people do care enough to explain something

It's criminal that soundtrack has been stolen from UK buyers. If I'd have known I'd not of bought it.

It happens a lot, most of the times there need to be some additional dubs on the disc, so the first thing that's deleted is the original sound track. It happened with the Disney movies too.
