Ok I have read alot of info on hereabout subs and I have it narrowwed down to three companies for a possible new sub for my system. I have a mid size room and I have an Onkyo 805 and JBL Speakers Northridge E-80 fronts with an EC-35 Center all three way speakers and JBL HTC in wall and ceiling for surrounds. I currently have a JBL Northridge powered sub which puts out a tremble but from all that I have read even bass can be loud and clear and mine sounds very muted. Here are my three choices:
1) SVS PB10-NSD 2) HSU Research VTF-1 3) Elimental Designs A2-300 or A3-300 They all have great reviews and seem more than powerful enough for my mid size room and I am a huge movie buff, not much on music listening so I want a sub that delivers a good punch to the chest. The best experience I have had with a sub was at a Magnolia store and the guy put on that bad Kevin Costner Western Open Range, but the scene were he shoots the guy in the head that killed his freind was played on Definitive Technology top of the line sub and it felt like I had gotten shot in the chest...simply awesome. Now I may not get that full effect from these subs but maybe I will. I really like the price of the A2-300 but would be willing to spend a hair more if it makes that big of a difference. |

It's in his sig, the same one you are looking at.
Also, I saw your pics earlier and if your room opens into the kitchen, it is going to be harder to fill the room with punchy, impactful bass as the sub will actually have to pressurize both rooms. |

I was afraid of that, so even if I put it in the back corner it will still have to contend with an open kitchen design. So really I should go bigger on the sub as I have more like a large room??

I also have a SVS sub (PC+ 20-39, bigger than the PB10-NSD) and it's great! You definitely feel the bass! When the bridge is falling in Cloverfield... Wow!
Another great sub that is not on your list is the AV123 MFW-15! It's definitely one of the best performance/price sub! |

I bought the step up(20-39 PC+) since my home theater is in the living room and it opens up into other areas. Good thing I did too! |

If you can swing the PB12-NSD then I would def go for that (although its not exactly small either!)
You're kitchen kind of throws a loop into your bass management. You can still get great bass output, you just may not vibrate the shirt on your back without a top-of-the-line sub. You mentioned putting it in a corner, which will definitely help output so I think will still be pleased with a sub upgrade. |

Let me add one more woofer, I have heard alot of good things about Aperion Audio and they have these new Bravus subs which have the Bash amplifiers and have either 8", 10" or 12" dual subs in them. I am leaning towrds the dual 10" but that pushes the budget a bit. Any thoughts on this?

The specs don't look that great on the Aperion, especially not for the price. It seems to be lacking a little extension which is very important for home theater. The othe thing is that they are light (weight-wise). The dual 12" Bravus only weighs 62 lbs..... two drivers and a cabinate only 62lbs? Doesn't sound like very good cabinate construction to me.

Not a bad thought and this would be cheaper than the Bravus by at least $100 or more. OK let me ask you this, how does one hook up two subs. I have the Onkyo 805 and it has one pre out for a sub. I guess the next best question is am I hooking my sub now up right. I have the single sub out going to either the left or right input on the sub, does this matter and is this right?

Sweet you answered my last question on another thread about hook up, but still how does one hook two subs up when there is only one pre out (purple plug) on the 805. BTW I had it hooked up right, even a blind squirrle finds a nut once in awhile...lol. I really like the idea about two subs...oooo. Also, if there is a single pre out on the reciever then why is there not a single in on the sub, why the left and right? |
