I would connect the RCA composite connectors first!

Then I would check the HDMI cable and the connectors on the TV

Is it a new unit? Or one that was working before and now is not?

Its not new unit but it has been working nicely since the day one. We got it together on the launch day. Base on my observation, I suspect maybe a video card failure cause laptop computer has simular issue. I hope this is not the case cause this might be the worst senario. This unit is long out warrenties since its an launch model

Did he happen to disconnect it one day to bring to someone else's house or to connect it to another tv that isn't in high definition? One of my friends did that once at his cottage and his PS3 automatically took the input setting, but when he reconnected it at his HD television it had a black screen.

no, he never bring out the ps 3 to other location. it happened when he was watching a DVD and it went black screen by the end of the movie. He just turn it off and on the picture dose not show anymore.

I haven't examined my PS3 that much, but is there a reset button or something else on the outside of the system? I know there is in the menu, but you can't even see that...

what is he connected to? (what HDTV?)

if sound is coming through, it seems like a simple setting is off somewhere, or possibly video trouble? ...but id like to say its just settings.

nothing, no picture just audio. There is nothing wrong with any of the setting. I really believe its an hardware failure but I was hoping someone else might know the prob and a possible solution.

Hook it up to a different display using a known "good" cable. If you still get no picture, then it's the PS3. Assume you've held the power button down on the PS3 to reset it, and that didn't help?

If a hard reset doesn't work, it's likely a hardware problem.

Hope that PS3 is not doing as bad as your English ... sorry just kidding
Check the guarantee and if it's still valid they will exchange it for a new one of the same kind

When you say 'reset', do you mean just powered off and on? Or hae you done the 'video reset', in which (at the red light) you hold the power button down for 5 seconds until you hear it beep again, which will reset the video to configure it again?
