Unhappy Need some help with my PS3 display

Hey there fellas, I didn't recieve much help on the Sony forums so I thought of you guys. Perhaps I will find another individual out there who knows a bit more than me on the subject. Here is my current setup.

20G PS3
WestingHouse LVM-47w1 monitor
1.3 HDMI cable direct connection from PS3 to Monitor
Optical Cable for audio to a reciever

Here is my problem, I was watching Talledega Nights on BD the other night and everything was lookin nice, the image filled the screen with zero cropping and everything. So I popped in the disk last night to show my buddy what Blu-Ray was all about and bam, I had the horizontal bars on the top and bottom of my screen. My buddy was still very impressed, I however am very aggrivated as I can't seem to think of any setting that would have been adjusted on either the PS3 or the Display that had anything to do with BD playback.

I did not have the display on any fill/zoom mode, there was no cropped image. The aspect ratio of the disk is 2.40:1 (to my understanding that is technically 2.39:1). I asked my boss at work today who has a glorified setup with a PS3 and he said his screen does not display any bars either with no zoom or crop. ( 70' Sony Bravia XBR2 I believe )

I have messed with the DVD upscaling options as well as the letterbox and pan and scan options with little change to the picture. I currently have it on letterbox. If any of you have any thoughts on an option I may have overlooked or even to just reafirm that I am not going completely insane . . . that would be awesome cheers.
