This is a very heated topic.

Please read through the countless other threads about this exact issue. There are some people here that swear by the PS3, and then theres people here that swear by a few models of standalone players.

the ps3's main draw back is it can't bitstream hd audio for your reciever to decode. the ps3 decodes the hd audio formats internally. another draw back is some people can't handle having a device that can play videogames. they're just too good to have a videogame console as their blu-ray player. 3rd draw back, you have to use the ps3 controller or buy the ps3 bluetooth remote. so if you have a universal remote you have to get a usb thingy to control the ps3.

so if you can handle these draw backs than i would go for the ps3 if you can afford it. the absolute best bang for the buck blu-ray player.

There's nothing to apologize for. You'll get swamped by lots crazy posts telling you what to do. My recommendation to you is to keep asking till you are satisfied with a response. There should be a mature person to help you at some point.

Bitstreaming, analog outputs, infared control, fan noise, and form factor.

What features/capabilities do you need in a player? The PS3 may be a fine player. But, if your AVR lacks HDMI, the PS3 won't give you lossless audio. People can be of more assistance if you provide some information about your player requirements.

The PS3 is an excellent, future-proof player with onboard decoding of the HD audio codecs and excellent PQ. However, as listed above, there are some drawbacks. I use one, but am starting to get annoyed by the fan noise, which I never heard up till about a month or two ago. Once really good stand-alone players with internet capability and ability to bitstream HD audio (I want to see the audio on my 705!) break the $300 mark, I will probably upgrade and move my PS3 to the Family Room. Hopefully, this will be before the end of the year.

Optical can only deliver 2.0 with PCM. You can't bitstream DTS-HD Master and DD True HD via optical.

With the PS3, if you want HD audio, you better have a receiver than can receive HDMI audio.

Yep, on my list. Since this is not a "must buy" at the time, I'm holding-off till Black Friday to see what deals can be had. Discretionary funds are a bit low these days.

No, you will only get Dolby Digital and DTS. No Dolby TrueHD, PCM higher than 2.0, or DTS HDMA.

You can find a blu-ray that uses analog out and decodes the new codecs in the blu ray and connect it that way and to get the new sounds.

There's a couple of blu-rays that does that.The 1400 does

go to the reciever forum, look for the sticky called"Have an old school reciever(non-hdmi)and want loss-less audio.I know your recievers isn't old but i think this is what you need to know.

Good luck,There is a way

You won't "see" any difference, but you will hear a BIG difference between lossy and HD audio!
