Default Lets Play Name That Speaker!!!!!

Ok so I found a speaker in my Mom's garage that we used to have in our old HT when i was a kid. I have no idea what kind of speaker it is nor do i have any clue how to hook it up . Is it a subwoofer? Does it have an internal amp? Is it worth hooking up to my system to replace my crappy sub or run in conjunction? or is it something different? If its now worth keeping... who wants to buy it joking. Please speaker gods smile upon me.

Check out the date stamp man i feel old.

Looks like it's a 2-channel passive sub. You hook it up by running your amplifier's L and R outputs directly to the input terminals on the SW1V. Then run another set of wires from the output jacks to your main L/R speakers. I suspect this unit was designed to match a specific pair of NHT satellite speakers, so that the sensitivity and crossovers would align correctly for smooth frequency response. Maybe they are still AWOL in the garage.

They will not have deep bass:

http://www.slfhemmabio.nu/htm/nht-history.htm

They look to only go down to 40hz, but NHT have made nice sounding speakers over the years so of you can find the R/L speakers for them maybe you can make a nice 2 channel system from them.

It doesn't look like a bad subwoofer. NHT actually makes good products. Don't concern yourself with numbers and specification as they mean nothing for a subwoofer. Out of all the speakers, a subwoofer intreacts the most with the room boundaries and you end up hearing the room. This model is passive and does not have a built-in amplifier. However, it does have a crossover to send signals to the satellite speakers. I have a few passive subs and they sound excellent.

You have two options. One option is to connect it to your system as srrndhound suggested in post #3. The other option is buy a subwoofer amplifier (does not have to be very expensive) and connect an RCA cable from the LFE (sub out) of your receiver to the new amplifier and run two speaker wires from the amplifier to the subwoofer. You can optionally connect two cheap resistors from Radio Shack to the speaker outputs on the subwoofer. I prefer option two. You can buy good amplifiers at reasonable prices from Parts Express.

You should/could also depending on the ohm rating of the subs and amp run them bridged for reinforced bass output. Just wire the subs out of phase and you will here some nice bass output.

Plop it in a corner and or other locations and even experiment with them facing the wall and such.

Hey it looks like it's in good condition too. If I had it I would buy an external sub amp and use it. Big Daddy is not wrong..........use it!!!

Excellent, that make sense. I actually never seen a setup like that. I didn't really start getting into HT until about 2 years ago. The other satellite speakers would still be in the house in FL since they were in-wall.

I remember it was a pretty B*chin system for the time. I think i might try both options. Set it up inline and buy an amp in the future. What do I do with the resistor though? Do i loop them from output red L to output black L adn same for the Right? Also what wattage amp do you recommend? btw thanks for the links

Its an old Passive 12 inch NHT (Now Hear This) Subwoofer SWV1. It has an outboard 100 watt amp that goes to it. Nice sub. Won't play very loud though - and can't go as deep as most modern subs. I loved NHT back in the day of the 3.3's

Are you sure it is 12"? When I looked it up it showed:

SW1V
1991
2 x 6.5"
40Hz -
8 ohms
86dB
20W -

Those look bigger than 6.5" woofers from the picture. That's deceiving........

Excellent. Thanks for playing guys! LOL. If i had to guess it would be a 6.5" x 2 sub. i would love to get an amp and hook it up to see how it sounds, but it might be more realistic to purchase a more modern sub. Trust me i need it bad. check out my setup in my signature. The only thing that its lacking is a decent sub. If i can find an amp on craigslist for cheap i'll pick one up and see how it goes.

To have a lot of bass, you need to move a lot of air. The measure of air movement is called displacement and is measured in cubic feet or cubic centimeters (meters). The air moved by a woofer is the surface area of its cone (pi times r squared, remember high school geometry) multiplied by the movement in and out (excursion or throw). A high quality 15" woofer can move approximately 1/2" and can displace approximately 66 ft square of air. Smaller woofers have a larger excursion than larger woofers. When you put two of them together in a large box, you can effectively do the job of a larger woofer. Think of your NHT subwoofer as an approximately 12" subwoofer. The key is more power. Give it as much power as you can afford without roasting it and you will get better results.

That's not really a sub...

It's more like a bass bin for both L and R channels.

More than likely GoodWill fodder at this point. Dual 6.5s isn't going to get you much output, nor is it going to go very deep.

Just adding speakers and drivers to a system all willy-nilly like isn't a good way of going about things.
