Default Finally there!

I made the mistake recently of digging up my old Harman Kardon AVR 230 receiver & hooking it up to my computer to listen to MP3’s. Even with this compressed music, I noticed detail I wasn’t getting from my TX-SR605. So, I took out the Onkyo and put in the HK. Since I only had the Panny BD30, I wasn’t getting the decoding of the new codecs, so I grew impatient & applied for a line of credit at CC & sprung for a new Panasonic BD55. Hooked it up via analog cables, and popped in Iron Man & Transformers. It was like I was hearing them for the first time. With the Onkyo, everything was bright & flat sounding. With the HK I hear detail I didn’t hear before, and everything sounds honest & natural. Effects come through with weight & authority, even though the receiver is only rated at 50 watts per. Yes, I know more power would be good, but it gets plenty loud.

The display is a 50” Panny 768p, but I can feed it 1080p and it looks great. The speakers are old Paradigms I found used. They’re in great shape, and sound fantastic. Detail, imaging, soundstage…best I’ve had so far. The Adcom amp in the lower right is powering a 12” sub I pieced together from an old enclosure & a Dayton 12” aluminum driver. Man, that thing delivers on the bass.

So, it looks like I’m set. I went to Amazon.com and they have the BD55 for less than I got it from CC. Think I might take it back today and see if they’ll give me the difference.

With those kinds of speakers, it will be pretty obvious the differences between receivers. Each receiver will normally have a different sound and everyone will always have an opinion as to which is best. Some receivers are best matched with certain speakers and vice versa.

The center (cc-300) was $125, and the mains (5seMk3) were $150. I really love Paradigm, but I don't like the metal dome tweeters in their current line. It took a while to find everything used, but I'm glad I did. And the best part is, they're already broken in! All the speakers are in great shape for being used, so I know I'll have them for a while.
