I have built a mediacenter a while ago and upgraded it with a blu-ray player last week. The specs of my mediacenter are:
Abit an-m2hd motherboard (with onboard nvidia 7050 video) athlon x2 4850e 3 gig memory MSI 7900gt videocard AOpen BDR0412SA Blu Ray player Cyberlink powerdvd vs 7.3 Samsung LE40A656 LCD television I installed the blu ray player and the powerdvd software. I connected my videocard (7900gt) with a div-i to hdmi cable. Bought my first blu ray movie (Colverfield) to test everything. I presumed my 7900gt videocard supported HDCP. But the powerdvd software stated that my videocard was missing HDCP support. And it was correct, I made a mistake, my videocard indeed did not support HDCP. Powerdvd recommended me to put a hdmi to vga converter on my videocard and connect to the LCD screen with a VGA cable. Which i did. And hence I could see the Cloverfield on my LCD television. I turned Analog instead of digital. But I now I was wondering...Am I watching a Full HD movie now or am I watching a constrained (less resolution 540p instead 1080p) or less quality version? Off course I tried to find some answers via Google. But what I found out is that constraining blu ray movies is still not implemented on the disks. So it is probably 1080 (not sure though). But I am still wondering if there is a quality difference at all with VGA/Analog vs HDMI/Digital? Thx in advance for your answers. |

Hmmm... Well, I'm taking the HDMI out from the PS3, into a switcher, then HDMI out to DVI, then to an HDCP compliant converter box to VGA then to my display and it rocks at HD
I'd say that you are getting HD and that the adaptor sequence is adding the HDCP because without my box being compliant... I wouldn't see a picture. I tried it. |

If you have your computer's resolution set to 1920 x 1080, then that is what your tv is displaying, so yes, it's HD. VGA cables can carry 1920 x 1080 signals with no problems.
