Question receiver upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my Yamaha RX V659 to either a Yamaha RX V663 or a Pioneer Elite VSX O1THX. I am interested in your opinions.

Hi,

I have the AVR 130 and I want to upgrade to be able to have lossless audio.

What can I get ? Would it be a good move or it's no big difference ?

Thanks

Do you have a player already?

Does the receiver have analog inputs?

I think you're trying to tell me that I can have the lossless audio without upgrading thru analog out.
But I can't because I'm using a PS3.

What sort of Blu-ray player are you using with your receiver? If it's a PS3, like me, you'll need an HDMI equipped receiver in order to receive lossless audio. This week I replaced my Yamaha HTR-5960 receiver, which is very similar to your RX-V659, with a Yamaha HTR-6080, which is the same as the RX-V861. I would suggest doing the same thing, because the sound is incredible via the PS3.

The HTR-6080 (RX-V861) is the 2007 model, being replaced this year by the RX-V863, and it's a step up from the RX-V663 you mentioned. The retail price is $999, but I found it online last week brand new for $279 shipped. It doesn't have built-in decoders for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA, but if your player decodes them, which the PS3 does, then having built in decoders is unnecessary.

Also, just so you know, Yamaha manages two distribution lines - one for specialty hi-fi stores (RX-V) and the other (HTR) for online sales and big box retailers - by renaming the same receivers. So this year's RX-V663 is the same receiver as the HTR-6160, and the RX-V863 is equivalent to the HTR6180. My HTR-6080 is the same as last year's RX-V861.

Here's a link to the receiver specs:

Amazon has the 806 for $20 cheaper.

Thanks kingofgrills for posting that! I don't know how many times I've tried to explain that to people in general (not just here). My HTR-6190B is the equivalent of the RX-V1800.

I scanned quickly and couldn't see your budget...

I'm loving my new Sony STR-DA6400ES. The GUI is great and I'm really happy with it's handling of the HDMI inputs and the upscaling of video.
