Default Receiver upgrade? 2 channel setup?

I currently have a Hitachi SR-2004 but think to get true HD audio I need to upgrade to something more recent. Im planning on doing a total overhaul, but in parts rather then all at once. I plan to spend as much as needed to get the best I can thats reasonable, so please dont say I need $14,000 B&W speakers and receivers. I use a ps3 and plan to get a Pioneer Ultra Kuro. What would be a good receiver for this? I want something that will give me excellent results but lets put a cap at this about $2000. I will currently just run two fronts but will expand up to 7.1 if I desire. This will be used for games and blu-ray/DVD. Thank you.

Or what would be a the best receiver for a 2 channel setup as my space may not be able to support 7.1 but It could do a 5.1 but there may be distortions due to the small area. So im thinking a 2 channel may be my best bet and just get some really killer speakers along with a receiver that is intended for HD 2 channel.
