Default Advantages of getting a receiver?

I'm thinking about getting one of the players that decodes the lossless audio by themselves but I am also of thinking of getting a receiver later down the line. What sort of advantages do I get with a receiver? Or does the standalone decoding do fine? I am also going to upgrade the whole sounds system speakers and subwoofer.

imagine it like this, you current receiver helps you enjoy the movie as if you were wearing ear plugs, when you get a new receiver that can decode HD audio...then it is like taking those ear plugs out of your ears for the first time and truly getting to experience the movie the way it was suppose to be.

I've never had a receiver before my current sound system just plugs directly into the DVD players analogue outputs. So I am now thinking about the Sony S550 that decodes the lossless audio. So far I have been using my PC with PowerDVD 8 Ultra and a 24" monitor and the Logitech X-540 plugged into that.

Think of it like this:

Right now you're using a rather small speaker system so you don't need much to power them (not to say it's bad, just small). This means you're getting decent sound coming out of your system, but nothing special.

SO, if you want to upgrade to some bigger speakers and a subwoofer someday, the kind that will blow you away and make your movies and music come to life, then you'll need a receiver to power them. Plus, the nice ones decode the high def audio so you get the best possible sound for movies. A lot of people recommend the Onkyo 606 as a great starter receiver that decodes high def audio. It also has a feature called Audyssey. It pretty much custom fits your speakers to the room they're in and they will sound the best that they can to you on your couch/chair, etc

Once you start, you can't go back; you always get the itch to tweak here and there and upgrade
