Question HD DVD Advantages?

Hi.

I have a simple question. What make people think that HD-DVD is better than Blu-ray?

I mean, Blu-ray have larger space, bigger bitstream and better protection. What on earth does HD-DVD has of advantages???

Yes, the search bar is an amazing tool. There are so many existing threads that illustrate the clear differences between the two formats.

What the comparisons won't tell you is that you can have fun learning how to boil discs with your family is you go with the hybrid format.

Oh, I guess I was to post-happy there. Sorry.

Well, Transformers wasn't enough to stop Blu-ray sales, the need of boiling a disc is not really positive. So I guess it's only the cheap players which is good. Which Sony is now countering with holiday price cuts for Sony Blu-ray players...

Boiling discs indeed!!! ... Truly interactive feature of HD-DVD (just don't scald your fingers).

Drinking the water afterwards (with a little sugar) may enhance your experience of the movie

Only care about BB, Matrix, V, and Posiedon. Those are from Warner and will be released next year. If they were Universal or Paramount then I would be neutral. I prefer to use the money for a second player to replace more standard DVDs. Simple economics.

Default Advantage HD DVD

Here are the advantages of HD DVD:
1. Price. Like it or not that's a factor. That's why people shop at Walmart even though the store clerks are clueless and can't help you with anything.
2. Players. HD DVD has always had the functionality that Blu Ray is just now catching up to.
3. Bit Rate: Actually the bit rate on HD DVD is slightly faster than BR giving better color. That has recently changed with the 1.1 release of BR so not that big of an advantage now.
4. The disk capacity is pretty much a non issue right now. The standard HD movie uses about 15 GB for a 2 hour movie. Since both formats currently support 50 GB (though in the future it will be more), there is still a lot of unused space. Only a small portion of that will be used for extras and downloadable content. The only benefit to BR will be the possibility of fiting the Star Wars series on 2 disks instead of 4. Not a big issue in most people's book.
5. As much as all of the "techies" hate to admit it, picture and sound quality are also a non issue. Sure, BR has lossless sound and all the other fancy sounding stuff. But, besides the fact that 95% of the people can't tell the difference, there are so many other factors affecting your viewing experience (TV quality, sound system, coding on the disk) that there is really no clear winner in the two.

In case you're wondering about my "Fanboy" status, I'll let you know that I do own an HD DVD player. Mainly because of the reasons I stated above.

My personal opinion is that BR is a great system that is ahead of it's time. I think that BR wasn't really ready to come out, but was forced to by the release of HD DVD. The technology is still too pricey and the Standards for the players were not clearly defined, leading to issues with player compatibility. Those of you that have PS3s are in great shape though. The issue is more with the 1.0 stand alone players. The best case would have been if HD DVD had not released and BR had more time to perfect the SA Players before release. This may truly be a Beta vs. VHS scenario. The more advanced system may die out due to pricing. Guess we'll have to wait and see what Warner does.
